Kulhanek Conquers ASCS Gulf South at HRP

 

Lonnie Wheatley, BAYTOWN, Tex. (June 24, 2006) Defending American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region champion Ray Allen Kulhanek cracked victory lane for the first time this season by decimating the field in Saturday night's 25-lap feature at Houston Raceway Park.

 

 

Starting from the pole position, Kulhanek gunned into the lead from the outset and raced to a 6.704-second victory margin aboard James Parker's CHB Power/Iron Head Fabrication No. 41 Schnee, lapping all the way up to fifth in the process of collecting his sixth career ASCS Gulf South Region feature win.

 

 

While Kulhanek cruised out front, current series point leader Greg Rilat outdueled Lane Whittington over the early rounds to take over the runner-up slot for keeps. Whittington then traded the show position with Kansas invader Chad Meinholdt several times before Meinholdt took command of third on the white flag lap.

 

 

Whittington crossed the stripe fourth behind Kulhanek, Rilat and Meinholdt, wit Scottie McDonald making a late move into the top five.

 

 

Kent Lewis, Jr., raced from 19th to snare sixth, while Gary Watson battled a flat right front tire from the third lap on to claim seventh. Channin Tankersley crossed the stripe eighth, with Richard Holt and Ty Johnson completing the top ten.

 

 

Meinholdt, Rilat and Watson topped heat race action for the 27-car field. Stephen Chevallier and Darryl Wills both walked away from mangled mounts in separate heat race incidents.
