Watson Walks into ASCS Gulf South Win at Motorama

Lonnie Wheatley, BEAUMONT, Tex. (June 23, 2006) Gary Watson took full advantage of a late-race miscue by Rickey Lee Tankersley to score his first career American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region feature victory in Friday night's 25-lap feature at Motorama Speedway.

When Tankersley flipped while leading on the 22nd circuit, Watson took command and charged to victory lane aboard the Watson/Tywater Racing No. 3 Buckley.

Taking the reins from 15-year-old son Channin, Rickey Lee Tankersley earned the pole position and outgunned fellow front row starter Tommy Bryant for the early lead in his first start since 1993.

With the race well in hand, Tankersley paced a quick opening 15 circuits before the race's first caution flew for Darryl Wills, who spun in turn four. At the same time, Kansas visitor Chad Meinholdt jumped the turn two cushion and flipped.

Back under way, Tankersley had amassed an approximate half straightaway advantage by the 22nd lap, when he also became a victim of the turn two cushion and gave away a certain victory in the process as he slapped the wall and tumbled down the backstretch.

Watson inherited the lead and raced to the checkered flag in front of Stephen Chevallier and Scottie McDonald, with Chris Sweeney and Greg Rilat advancing from 16th and 17th, respectively, to round out the top five.

Kent Lewis, Jr., claimed sixth, with Bryant, Ray Allen Kulhanek, Richard Holt and Kent Lewis, Sr., completing the top ten.

Bryant, Wills, Watson and Chevallier topped heat race action, with Brandon Berryman winning the "B" Main.
