Amalie Oil Texas Nationals, presented by Ancira Cars, Trucks & RV's and San Antonio Express-News @ San Antonio Raceway, 3/24/06

By J M Hallas

San Antonio, Tx., (March 24) The IHRA kicked off it's 2006 season Friday afternoon with qualifying for all classes, highlighted by two rounds of the Pro classes running an afternoon and evening session. 352 cars from all across the United States, plus Canada rolled through the gates at the high class facility. The Pro Classes included 14 Top Fuel Dragsters, 9 Alcohol Funny Cars, 33 Pro Modifieds, 25 Pro Stocks, and after a fourteen year absence in the IHRA, 11 Top Fuel Funny Cars.

Cool air temperatures had the competitors making maximum horsepower with record, both track and national, being broken left and right. Eleven of the sixteen Pro Stock qualifiers in round 1 eclipsed the previous track mark, while the top six beat the old elapsed time standard. Scott Cannon jr and Ricky Distyefano split the ET and speed records for both track and national(pending back-up) Rob Atchison bettered his old track record for speed, then promtly stuck it in the sand trap in Alcohol Funny Car. Frank Pedregon put up the time and speed to beat by running the fastest and quickest for the new IHRA Nitro Funny Car class.

In top fuel qualifying it wasn’t so much as who made it in or broke records in round 1, but who was still on the outside looking in. five time Top Fuel champ and defending event champion Clay Millican sat tenth after round 1. Last years top qualifier, Bruce Litton was only able to muster up the ninth quickest time.

Pro Qualifying Round 2

Second round qualifying was an interesting mix of drivers setting new records, while others struggled to get hooked up.Cooler temps made for more horsepower, getting the power to the ground was the trick. Many of the Pro Modifieds couldn’t find the handle. In Nitro Funny Car, Cruz Pedregon bettered his brother Frank’s marks on track and national times. Brian Gahm took back a record in Pro Stock in track and national ET(pending back-up), while Rick Jones increased the track speed mark.
