Budman
Photo of a very young Marvin Fillip, taken in 1962 at Austin Speed-o-rama. Marvin passed away earlier this year.

Budman
That was ONE fast race car! I do remember one night, he got up on top of the guard rail out there for about half a lap, straddled it. That was one bumpy ride, every time he crossed over a rail-road tie that were used for uprights, but never went over it.
Budman
Those cars were very unforgiving if you tried rubbing them together. Talk about RESPECT for and TRUST in each other .............. twenty-five lap features were over in less than 7 minutes. "Incidents" were fairly rare. The racing? .......... very fast, highly skilled driving. I guess that's why I find myself a bit impatient at times these days when features are being run two laps at a time between yellows. Budman
Incidentially, this photo is borrowed from racingfromthepast.com. See this and other photos from that era on that site. I had to resize and crop the photo to get it to load on here.
Bobby
This is interesting timing on this post. Tomorrow, July 25, is the one year anniversary of Marvin's death.

Budman
I love to look at old pictures like that of Marvin above. Notice the size of that steering wheel. It huge! No power steering in those cars, and with a wheel that size it was easy to input minute corrections.
