Apparently the name change happened between late '70 and late '71. - http://racersreunion.com/community/forum/stock-car-racing-history/29426/december-12-1971-the-king-claims-texas

I think it may also say a lot about the current promoters we have now at these tracks. I have only been to Cotton Bowl so far this year. But it is a first class facility and it is run very very well.
Very much so, on both points.

..... he went into a tirade about the true late model guys; how fast they were going, how close they were racing each other and others, and how loose the cars were. He went on to say they were dangerous and should not be out there. Luke and Moose started laughing, and when the sporty guy asked why they were laughing, Griffin said, "Hey, they are out there just having fun, wait until tomorrow when they get serious".
I've heard it said that Greg Davidson had the same problem at one of those type events. Track officials came around asking if he was having problems. He said "No. Why do you ask"? They said "Well, you were pretty loose out there". He said "Well, I'll admit I don't have it completely dialed in yet". They said "OK, we'll give you another chance".
Only problem was, they didn't feel anymore comfortable as the day went on. They told him to not come back until "he could get his car under control"......
Pretty funny - dilettante racers upset with a serious racer.....

Why does it seem like we've had this conversation before.......?

Supers are *required* to have spotters, as with all of the Pro classes. As far as transponders, the track has had them available for rental in the past, so contact Gina (Gina@txarp.com) to see what is happening this year.

OK. Here it is. Taken 1975 at Pan Am. I've always thought this amazing pic to be in the top four or five ever posted on this site. We've all seen many, many pics of race cars, drivers, wrecked race cars, upside down race cars, burning race cars, etc. etc. ………… But have you ever actually SEEN THE FIRE DEMON? Here it is …….
I think the amazing part is seeing the driver crawl out before the safety crew arrives. Keep in mind that he's coming out the passenger side because the driver's side is against the wall and burning. Fire suits weren't a thing back then, I can only recall one person who wore one (I think.....). Safety crews didn't wear them either (and usually still don't, at tracks I've attended).

Yes. Slightly south, in Goodrich. If you are on Facebook, follow either Battleground Racers or Marlon Mcgown.

I've heard rumors there might be some dirt on the track at some point....

I liked the one-thousandth endplay in the piston pins causing nasty harmonics.

I couldn't watch the video from work, so I don't know if this was mentioned in it. The background story of how Ford made the engines reliable is pretty interesting. I read somewhere about how employees found it eerie to walk by a dyno room with a Le Mans test in progress and it sounded like the engine was out on the track.
Very interesting. Excellent article!

A most excellent communication.

Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Devil's Bowl in Dallas, would be two of the mainstays. Heart of Texas in the Waco area clearly has a very successful program. This website may help, although it is not kept current - https://www.racingin.com/track/texas.aspx

Frank Torres has passed on. His son Johnny is on this forum and has been actively running dirt for quite a few years now.

But that one was there. Paid car entry, pit passes, etc. A last minute technical difficulty shouldn't be interpreted as lack of cars, or. interest.

Trying to remember the lap times for the factory stocks that visited hmp in the past . Since then I know they have become faster . The average time for pro stocks a few seasons ago was 16 - 16.5 a lap( not all , but most) Just trying to see if there would be a possible way of integrating these two classes to make one class without changing the pro stocks that are sitting and waiting. A mid 16 sec per lap class, I think is very affordable and competitive.

The last full season that we ran the pro stock class we started off the season with a new set of tires. After that we ran nothing but 8" pulloffs from a modified team . We wasn't the fastest , but for two races, the times didn't fall off much at all. $80 a set. Used about 5-6 gallons of fuel a night. Ran mostly stock parts , nothing fancy. And had a good season. And a whole lot cheaper than a current factory stock. Still pulling for the pro/streetstock class. I know it's not a crossover class, but there are a few setting around waiting for the word.
I think if you allowed Novas, eight or ten inch tires, any non-quick change rear end, and headers, and reduced the allowable cam to what is in the Factories, the classes would combine.

I've been curious (and skeptical) on how the life of 10" pulloffs would compare to new 8" tires so I queried a team that's run Factory Stocks and other metric cars on dirt and at HMP. The initial response was positive, that the pulloffs would definitely be a cost savings. I invited them to this thread, so I'll not say any more for the moment, but I thought it relevant to this point in the conversation.

Speaking strictly from a fan standpoint at every track I have been most of the time the Factory Stock/Pure Stock class is the best feature race of the night and with the highest car count. Of course that is dirt track. I was wondering if traction treatment would be cost effective. I've noticed a lot of NASCAR and tracks on MAVTV were using it and it really amped up side by side racing .
I think Texas Tom and Nick will attest that it used to be used at Pan American every night.

Tale of the Holloway track ownership, late '71 through 73. As you might guess they had a lien for unpaid work so they took it over to try to recoup - https://www.leagle.com/decision/1986975152michapp8231883
