Once upon a time there was a king named Mark Mathias who ruled over the NASCAR Road Runner division in the land called San Antonio Speedway. He acquired this title by winning races and accumulating more points than any of his fast foes. This past Saturday night, Mathias was seen racing around his kingdom 15 times in a row. Joining in on this jaunt, and plotting to dethrone the king were Charlie Henley, Leland Frautschi, Randy Frautschi, Nathan Sloan and Jamie Evans. While in hot pursuit, Sloan and Evans fell by the wayside. The remaining competitors tried hard to topple Mathias, but it was no contest. King Mathias rolled into his castle...victory lane.

 

The night was not yet over for the NASCAR Road Runner drivers, as they were scheduled to battle in the King of the Hill event. This featured two drivers basically dueling each other for two laps with the victor continuing on to the next round. There were some anxious moments for Sloan when he flipped his racecar, thankfully he was unscathed. In the final round, His Royal Highness (Mathias) edged out Charlie Henley and was crowned King of the Hill.

 

The 25-lap NASCAR Sportsman feature event was plagued by numerous yellow flags, the first one waving on Lap 1 when David Schooman got sideways between Turns 1 & 2, and both he and Eric Knudtson were sent to the back of the pack. As the race got underway again, Jamie Evans took the lead for a short time before handing the reins over to Greg Rohmer. On Lap 5, Tater Mason and Tom Casey touched, and Casey went for a spin. Schooman spun out on the restart, and Steven Ramzinski copied that move just two laps later. AND the yellow flags just kept coming...on Lap 8, Casey and Robert Mayberry tangled between Turns 3 & 4, and shortly thereafter, Knudtson and Mason made contact in Turn 2. Finally...the field settled down for some much anticipated green flag racing. Rohmer was still showing the way with Justin Oates, Evans, Casey and Garfield Shanklin in tow. Knudtson had already made two trips to the rear of the field, and little did he know it was about to be three. As the laps wound down, Knudtson kicked it in to high gear, and took the top spot away from Rohmer. Rohmer looked to retake the lead in Turn 4, but what he found instead was the black flag waving over his head, after he and Knudtson mixed it up, and left Oates with nowhere to go. Casey inherited the lead, and went on to win. Knudtson raced his way up to the runner-up position, and by doing so took over the points' lead. Evans, Shanklin and Mayberry finished in positions 3 - 5.

 

Thirteen NASCAR Late Models roared onto the high-banked oval for their 40-lap feature event. Sitting on the pole was Mark Ackerman, who set fast time with a lap clocked at 19.87 seconds, putting an end to Robert Barker's qualifying domination. James Cole started on the outside of Row 1. Barker and Jim Creech were paired together on Row 2. When the flagman displayed the green flag, Cole was eager to get the show on the road and jump started. On the second try, Cole emerged with the lead in Turn 2. On Lap 18, the caution lights lit up when Michael Lampton spun coming off Turn 2. Lined up behind Cole for the restart were Ackerman, Barker, Joe Aramendia and Donny Horelka. A few laps later both Barker and Aramendia blasted around Ackerman, and then set their sights on the super-fast Cole. There were two additional yellow flags thrown for the spun out cars of Scott Jerkins and Frank Johnson. Cole drove the wheels off of his #14 racecar for the remainder of the race, and captured his first victory of the season. Chasing him to the checkers were Barker, Aramendia, Ackerman and Horelka.

 

In other racing action, Mona Turner triumphed over Missy Jones and Chelsey Hartin in the NASCAR Women on Wheels feature event.
