Mel
Question for ROMCO teams, I read the thread on the ROMCO site about suggested tire pressures by DAY MOTORSPORTS. How much of a change are these suggested pressures from the normal pressures you run? With the increased pressures won't this play havoc with your ride heights,or can you just lower all corners of the car to adjust for this? Do you think there will be anyone willing to risk running lower pressures? How does ROMCO intend to police this, check everyone's pressures before they start? Good Luck.....Be Safe, I wanna watch ya'll all runnin the next race! Mel
Jason
Mel, I am not very experienced in car setups but woulnd't teams want to run as much air pressure in the tires are possible to get that extra speed?
NickHolt
Jason, You want the tires to run evenly across the face of the tire. Too little pressure and the tire runs on the edges. The edges get too hot and the center stays too cool. Too much air and it runs on the center. The center runs too hot and the edges stay too cool. The idea is to get a tire running the same temperature across the face of the tire. That way the tire is doing all the work it is capable of doing. So, teams use tire pyrometers to determine the optimum tire pressure to run on a given track at each corner of the car. But here's the problem. You have to guess (or use your records from prior races at that track) how much each tire's pressure will increase due to the heat build up expanding the gasses inside the tire. Most tires grow anywhere from 2-4 lbs on the left side to 4-8 pounds on the right side. Therefore, teams start with tire pressures below the pressure they know works best and hope the tires pressure "grows" the right amount to end up in the optimal range. In the ROMCO situation, the tire manufacture is telling the teams what pressures to run. The question is whether the teams will go with the suggested pressures or chose their own. A very interesting problem. Nick Holt
