NASCAR Busch Series driver Shane Hmiel, who was suspended for nearly four months at the end of the 2003 season for a violation of NASCAR’s substance abuse policy, has been indefinitely suspended for a second violation of the policy, NASCAR confirmed Thursday. NASCAR officials had Hmiel, 24, tested following Saturday’s night Busch race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., sources confirmed. Thursday afternoon shortly before the second practice at Dover International Speedway, Hmiel and his Busch team owner, Todd Braun, were escorted from the Busch garage by series director Joe Balash and Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition, among others. Hmiel was second fastest in Thursday’s first practice session. His car sat in the garage during the second practice, but late in the session Craftsman Truck series driver Ron Hornaday took the car out on the track. Hmiel is currently 14th in series points, with three top-five and four top-10 finishes this season. After his first violation, Hmiel was able to reapply for his license to compete in NASCAR-sanctioned events after meeting conditions for his reinstatement from the suspension.

They tested him AFTER THE RACE and he tested positive? They'd better throw the book at the little dipstick. He's lucky one of his competitors didn't smack him upside the head with a tire iron; but maybe that's why the "escort" out of the track: for his own protection.

I didn't think four months and a couseling session or two was enough "punishment" the first time, but maybe his daddy interceded. And maybe this time, he won't.

I'm telling you, that boy was loaded at TMS... He called his crew everything you can think of and threatened to kick his CREWCHIEF's a$$ after the race. If the FCC monitored their channel they would have thrown the book at him.

How good do you think Steve will be as Crew Chief for Jr. in the next few races?

remember when jarrett said shane would get a payback for running over him and shane said jarrett better hurry cause he didnt have much time left in racing-looks like shane dont have no time left now-makes you wonder how many races this year the flake was really impaired and high on drugs and trying to race-even when they interviewed him after a race or crash he appeared jacked up on something-i dont think it was one of those energy drink either

punk + racecar = Shane Hmiel

a perfect case of dumb@$$ behind the wheel

Now is the perfect chance for NASCAR to really set an example.....banished for life.... no exceptions.

But we all know this will never happen. NASCAR is all about the show & the dollar.... and dollars talk.

one of the best racecar drivers we'll never get to witness the capacity of....i'm not in any way justifying-but for me it's really a sad thing, i really like watching the guy...but he's got no one to blame but himself. i just don't know what to think, besides what a waste of unfiltrated talent.

Rosie, he seems more like a crackhead to me...

C-horse, you couldn't tell he was out of control a month ago? But I agree with what you are saying about his ability...don't worry, he'll get at least 2 or 3 more chances

Hopefully Colt called Braun and Ballew...

what did he test positive for-weed is a depressant...if he tested positve for that.........you thought he was wild a month ago ,just imagine if he would of been on anything else?

just like rosie said (NOT JUSTIFYING IT)but it stays in your system. it does not mean he was under the influence during the race...

I bet he has a mirror and razor blade built into all his racecars. He is a member of the lucky sperm club and had great oppurtunities but threw them all away. What an idiot.

Kinda sucks cause I wanted DJ to get him back.

Questions:

Why did NASCAR allow him in Dover Thursday only to eject him after he did one practice session ?

The urine test was last Saturday night at Charlotte after he drove in a NASCAR race !

Did the NASCAR lab service take five days to process the sample ?

HELLO ?

People get involved with drugs all the time and many times they can be helped. Its sad but I dont think this young man will let anyone help him. He has been given a talent and an oppertunity to race and he has thrown it away, I dont feel sorry for him at all. I do ,however feel sorry for his team and mostly his father and mother. His dad will have this following him around the garage for ever.

Don't do drugs kids, but drink all the alchohol you want... Yeah, yeah, make sure you drink plenty of Bud, Coors, Miller Lite and...

Alchohol is the worst (most underrated) drug ever! I don't condone any drinking or drugs, but I would really like to see alchohol sponsors go away. JMO...

Tobacco sponsors need to come back! I've got a signed poster of the Skoal Bandit car driven by Mr. Harry Gant from back in the day! B)

Can't you see it now... the eight-ball 500, the weed classic, crack-a-cola 600. It'd bring a whole new meaning to the term "burn-out".

Seriously though, drugs are dumb (putting it lightly...very lightly)! Who wants to see Ozzy Osborne behind the wheel? Ain't cool brotha! It's not right for the sport. NASCAR is worried about dropping the S bomb on t.v., saying that the drivers should be acting as role models (which they should...); they should not let drug abuse slide! Search his trailer, say they've got probable cause...maybe they'll find him in possession and can arrest him.

Gary Balough was the latemodel guy who got busted for drug running, thats how he was paying for his racing. Dont know if he was actually doing them too or not. Theres no relation between him and the Ballew with Ballew Motorsports.

Sucks that somebody like him has the chance many guys out there would do anything for, and he goes and f**ks it up because of stupid ass drugs. I think he has a lot of talent too, but theres no doubt Nascar should get rid of him for good.

I'm not surprised that this happened. The behavior Shane displays tells me he thinks he is above the rules.

It doesn't matter what the drug was, or when he took it. If he is on that crap, he doesn't belong out there, period.

I don't give a damn about his talent or ability to drive a car. After his first bust, I stated the same opinion, that there would be no loss of talent if he is not out there. It still holds true.

There are a lot of drivers out there with equal or more talent who would never take a tylenol again to get a shot at the car Shane was driving.

He had his chance, ban him for life.
