Canyon Speedway Park Sunday Report - Spangler Storms to Stock Car Shootout 100 Triumph at CSP

by Lonnie Wheatley

PEORIA, Ariz. (September 4, 2016) – Colorado’s Aaron Spangler made the most of his Labor Day weekend trek to Canyon Speedway Park by racing from five rows deep to capture the $2,000 winner’s share in Sunday night’s Arizona Differential Stock Car 100 Shootout presented by Allscapes Racing finale atop the 1/3-mile clay oval.

While Spangler enjoyed Stock Car laurels, Phoenix shoe Jay Foster raced from the fifth row as well to add his name to the list of 2016 IMCA Modified winners at CSP. Sweeps were the order of the night in the other three divisions with John Priest completing a son-father sweep of Mod Lites as Jacob Madrid and Bobby Brown finished off weekend sweeps in IMCA Hobby Stocks and Dwarf Cars, respectively.

After setting quick time in Saturday night’s qualifying session, Spangler was relegated to the ninth starting position in Sunday’s 100-lap IMCA Stock Car vs. SCRA Stock Car feature event after finishing fifth in his qualifying shootout.

It did little to deter him, as he worked his way forward and took the win ahead of current CSP points leader George Fronsman, who settled for runner-up honors after starting from the pole position. Tony Hill filled out the podium in third with 12th-starter Cody Center and 14th-starter Lonnie Foss rounding out the top five.

Starting tenth in the Arizona Differential IMCA Modified main event, Jay Foster charged to the win ahead of Guy Norton with Bubba Stafford, 16th-starter Brian Schultz and Mike Strobl rounding out the top five.

After picking off his first CSP win of the year the previous night, Jacob Madrid raced from the fifth starting position to finish off a sweep of the weekend’s Scottsdale Muffler & Automotive IMCA Hobby Stock vs. Renegade action in front of pole starter Richard Bennett, Dean Zachrison, 11th-starter Mark Kilian and Mike Hartsock.

After son Brenden topped Saturday’s feature, John Priest beat Chaz Baca, Jr., and Tyler Merrill to the line in Western Mod Lite action with Bobby Brown finishing off a sweep of the weekend’s Dwarf Car competition with an identical podium that included Darren Brent and Tony Martin.

Racing action at Canyon Speedway Park resumes on Saturday night, September 24, with the Mr. Excitement 40 Tribute to Terry Belcher featuring Late Models along with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars,

IMCA Hobby Stocks, Mod Lites and Micro Sprints.
