Local Racing Groups to Gather for Daytona 500 Watch Party

The Daytona 500 brings together all the best NEXTEL Cup racers and signifies the start of the 10-month NASCAR season for race fans across the world.

This year’s Daytona 500 will also bring together race fans from San Antonio, Central Texas and all across Texas.

Officials from San Antonio Speedway (SAS), Fans Associated with Stock Car Auto Racing (FASCAR) and the United States Racing Association (USRA) will join forces to host a Daytona 500 Watch Party on Sunday, February 20, at Firehouse Pub & Grill located at 5830 Walzem Road in San Antonio. The event will start at 11 a.m. CT, while the Great American Race starts at 1 p.m.

There are plenty of plans pending for the event, and they will be announced as they are confirmed. Event plans currently call for a Car Show with Drivers’ Appearances, including cars and drivers from SAS, along with cars and trucks and drivers from USRA. The show will feature the NASCAR Late Models, Sportsman, Road Runner and Women on Wheels classes from SAS, as well as the Super Late Models and USRA/ARTS Lone Star Region trucks series. There will also be door prizes given away during the event.

San Antonio Speedway is a NASCAR-sanctioned half-mile asphalt oval located at 14901 State Hwy. 16 South, about 3.5 miles outside of Loop 410. The 2005 season opener for SAS will be Saturday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. and will feature the NASCAR Late Models, Sportsman, Road Runner and Women on Wheels classes.

The USRA Super Late Models and Trucks series will run four times at SAS in 2005; the dates are April 2, June 25, Aug. 13 and Oct. 8. USRA was started by Terry Dickerson, who bought the then-ROMCO Super Late Model (SLM) series on Nov. 5, 2004 and then purchased the Lone Star Region of the ARTS (AllStar Race Truck Series) on Dec. 19, 2004 to add to the SLM series.

If you're interested in showing a SAS or USRA registered car or truck at this event, please contact either Chuck or me (contact info in press release above).

We will be giving a SAS/NDWS jacket to every registered SAS driver who brings his or her car to this event . . . all classes are invited to participate.

Although it's not mentioned in the press release, we're also planning to include a buffet meal for drivers and fans, along with soft drinks, tea and water. Sunday drink specials are $2.25 for Well Drinks and Domestic Long Necks.

We're currently looking for sponsors to help cover the event costs, so please let us know if you or one of your sponsors is interested. We will include their names in our press release updates.

We're also working on plans to include THR and a possible radio show by "The Motorsports Zone." Keep watching TSZ for more updates!
