Doar Jams in Mr. Excitement 40 Finale at CSP

Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (November 8, 2014) – Wisconsin’s Pat Doar topped the Mr. Excitement 40 Tribute to Terry Belcher by racing to victory lane in Saturday night’s 40-lap West Coast Late Model event atop the 1/3-mile Canyon Speedway Park clay oval.

While Doar took top Late Model honors, Missouri’s Hunter Marriott bested the IMCA Modified ranks, Matt Martinez topped the Pure Stocks and Jason Crowe won the Renegade main event.

Doar took command five laps into the West Coast Late Models season finale then held off the duo of R.C. Whitwell and Clay Daly over the final circuits to secure the victory.

“I was fortunate enough to sneak into the lead there somehow and the rest worked out,” Doar commented in victory lane.

While Doar gridded the feature field fifth, Dash winner Tommy Malcolm led the way to the green flag. But when Malcolm got loose in the opening pair of corners, fellow front row starter Lonnie Parker, Jr., seized the early lead with Doar quickly up to second.

Doar took command on a lap five restart and held the point the rest of the way, though a turn four bobble on the 32nd lap nearly cost him dearly.

“That was more than a bobble, I nearly drove right through the wall,” Doar explained.

Whitwell and title contender Daly closed to Doar’s rear bumper and kept the pressure on over the final rounds. Doar was up to the challenge, taking the checkered flag three car-lengths ahead of Whitwell with Daly settling for the show position.

Parker, Jr., crossed the stripe fourth with Tony Toste rounding out the top five.

After blowing an engine in the Dash, Friday winner and 2013 Mr. Excitement 40 sweeper Steve Drake jumped into a Toste backup machine for the feature and worked his way up to eighth to secure the West Coast Late Model 2014 championship by just 18 points over Toste with Daly two more points back in third.

In the 25-lap IMCA Modified main event, Hunter Marriott emerged from a wild four-car duel to take command on the 19th round en route to victory lane.

While Marriott started outside the fifth row, pole starter Jason Noll gunned into the early lead and paced the initial eight rounds before the slightest of turn four bobbles opened the door for Mike Strobl and George Fronsman.

With Strobl working down low and Fronsman on the top side, the duo raced side-by-side for the lead over the next ten laps with Noll and Marriott nipping at their heels in the battle for the lead.

Marriott found the opening he needed on the 19th round then led the final circuits to take the win ahead of Noll, with Friday winner Mike Jergens making a late move into the show position. Strobl was fourth with Fronsman in fifth.

In the 20-lap Pure Stock feature, Matt Martinez needed just seven laps to race from his 11th starting position into the lead en route to securing the track championship with his sixth win of the season.

Martinez weathered a late caution, fending off the advances of 15th-starter Steve Bitting and Friday winner Bo Partain over the final three rounds to snare the win. Joe Vlasity raced from 17th to fourth with fellow ninth row starter Zack Madrid rounding out the top five.

Jason Crowe completed a sweep of the weekend’s Renegade action by racing to victory lane in the 20-lap main event.

Crowe took the lead from Sara Reblin in the opening handful of laps and checked out on the field, ultimately taking the checkered flag ahead of Mark Killian, Brandon Gschweng, Guss Ellsworth and 2014 track champion David Harrington.

Action continues at Canyon Speedway Park with next weekend’s 14th Annual USAC Hose Advantage Hall of Fame Classic on Friday and Saturday featuring the USAC National Sprint Cars along with Challenge Cup Sprint Cars and Micro Sprints.
