Casey Smith Tied for Southern Super Series points lead after doubleheader weekend

Austin, TX 4/29/14 – Casey Smith entered the first Southern Super Series Pensacola/Mobile Doubleheader weekend fourth in the season point standings and knowing that this weekend could go a long way in becoming a contender for the championship.
Friday night Smith took his black #99 Smith Excavating and Paving Super Late Model to Pensacola’s famed Five Flags Speedway for the Mountain Dew Kick Start 125. Smith qualified 13th for the 125 lap event and was only able to work his way up to 12th as motor problems slowed the #99 Chevy in the first 75 laps. After the competition caution, Smith was able to work his way into the top 10 and finish in eighth, securing his third top ten finish in as many races.
“We had a tough night,” said Smith. “We had some motor issues and were just off the pace in general. We managed to finish eighth which will help us in the points.”
Saturday night Smith brought out his red #99 Smith Excavating and Paving Super Late Model at Mobile International Speedway for the mobile Lumber and Millwork 125. Smith was at the top of the charts in the first practice and second quick in the second practice. He would start in 9th though after overdriving the car in his qualifying lap. Smith ran in the top ten until lap 63 when he came in for a two tire pit stop. Smith rejoined the field in 17th but quickly made his way up to 8th before the Competition Caution at lap 75. Because of his pit stop at lap 63, Smith was able to stay out and inherit the third position for the restart and would run in the top five for the remainder of the race. Smith was passed by a charging Bubba Pollard, but was able to pass both Augie Grill and Hunter Robbins to make his way up to second where he finished the event.
“We were a little bit tight in the first half of the race and burned up the right front,” said Smith in a post race interview with speed51.com. “We came in early to get tires and made a bunch of changes that really helped the car a lot. We weren’t as good as Bubba (Pollard), but we’re happy with second for points. It’s not where we want to be, we want a win.”
After Smith’s first top five finish of the 2014 Southern Super Series season, he is now tied for the points lead with Anderson Bowen with 368 points. Pollard who swept the doubleheader weekend is tied for third with Augie Grill seven points back of Smith and Bowen. Kyle Grissom rounds out the top five in points 28 back of the leaders.
The next stop for Casey Smith and the Southern Super Series will be Montgomery Motor Speedway for the Rumble By the River on Saturday, May 10th.
