Casey Smith Takes Last Track Championship at San Antonio Speedway

Austin, TX 10/22/13 – In 1977 Terry Labonte won the first Late Model track championship at San Antonio Speedway. In 2013, the last Late Model track championship at the half-mile high banked short track, came down to the last race as Casey Smith and Chris Davidson went into the night separated by one point.

Davidson would wind up having trouble during the night and finished last in the 100-lap Late Model feature. But just because the championship was over did not mean that the fireworks were over for Smith for the night.

On a late race restart, Casey Smith was battling Charles Hagy for the lead when the two made contact sending Casey Smith into the inside wall on the backstretch. Smith, unhappy with Hagy after the wreck, showed his displeasure with him on the front stretch in the grass and then in the pits during the race. Smith would finish seventh in the race, but it was still good enough to take home the track championship.

“It’s an emotional time for all of us, it’s the last Late Model race here and we all wanted to win it,” said Smith after the race. “We won the championship, but not in the way we wanted to with a tore up race car. We’ve got some time to get the car put back together before we race it again here in a few weeks.”

The race that is in a few weeks that Smith is referring to is the season finale at Central Texas Speedway in Kyle, Texas, where he has finished no worse than second in any of the races there this year. Smith is looking to wrap up his second track championship of the season as he heads into the finale at Central Texas with a 29 point advantage over Ryan Luza.

“We’ve had a great year,” said Smith. “We’ve accomplished a lot of our goals so far this year and we want to keep our momentum going through this weekend into December.”

The season finale on Saturday, November 16th will mark the last race on Smith’s schedule before the 46th Annual Snowball Derby in Pensacola, Florida in December.

Congratulations Casey. I wanted to see you take that checkered flag at the finish but racing is racing and stuff happens. And as I told you after the race, since you did not win it, I was happy to see Mike Renniger win it because he too is a class act. See you at Kyle. Dano :D
