w2racing
Alright guys.......I need some advice on drilling stock axles. I am attempting to install the required 5/8 stud on a stock axle and have ran out of patience. I have burned up a couple of step drill bits and have broken a couple of drill bits already, probably because I can't drill a straight hole to safe me life. Is there a trick to accomplishing this requirement?
st.stock38
43/64 drill bit and drill real slow! Better to use drill press! the key is the bigger the bit the slower the speed!
Desert COP
43/64 drill bit and drill real slow! Better to use drill press! the key is the bigger the bit the slower the speed! Ditto that, and use some cutting oil when you do it. When using the drill press, let it cut a little, raise it up to let the bit cool, then drill some more. I've used the same drill bit (43/64) on my drill press to drill out at least 10 axles and rotors so far and it's still sharp as a tack. Key is not to overheat the bit, or you'll smoke the bit. Run your drill press at about 264 RPM's or the slowest setting!!
dancer52
all correct... with the cutting oil the most important part. A drill press makes it easy....but i have drilled a ton of them out on the car...just slow and steady with alot of cutting oil...(and the 43/64 bit...not a step bit)
w2racing
Thanks guys......The table top drill press that I have worked great with the rotors. Not so well with the axles. Drill press is bulky and I cannot position the axle under the drill. I see what I can do with a variable speed drill.
dancer52
I remove the table from mine set the axle thru the table stand....
huff37
A J that works well but I maade a bushing to tighten up the hole where the table goes and that works really well
