SEASON END NEARS, POINT RACE SIZZLES

By Aaron Ort

9/11 Texana Raceway continues to provide the gulf coast area’s dirt track racing enthusiasts with their dose of motor sports mayhem on Saturday nights in Edna, Texas. The season is winding into it’s last remaining months of the 2004 season where eight division champions will be crowned, capping off yet another exciting duration while entering one more mark in the record books!

Industrial High School freshman #34 Michael Harp of Inez looks to be going for his second in a row for the Bomber division where he holds a 295 point lead on second place #88 Sandra Hudgeons of Cuero, 1695 total points and 1400 total points, respectively. Hudgeons leads Victoria’s #81 Michael Wagner by 185 points with 1215 where Port Lavaca’s #66 Quintin Pecena follows in fourth, behind by185 points as well with 1030! The Bomber division is spaced out by a great deal, but the last night on the 2004 race schedule will be double points, so no one is out of the loop just yet!

The Street Stock division is where a late season battle is beginning to brew with Sheridan’s #8 Scott Turner leading Inez’s #25 Brian Brooks by a slim margin of 75 points (1705 and 1630)! With several different scenarios, Brooks has the ability to catch Turner and pass him for the points lead, yet vice versa may happen with Turner pulling out ahead further. Inez’s #3 Pete Herrschaft holds third with 1380 total points where Louise brothers, #95 David and #00 Andrew sit in fourth and fifth with 1245 and 1230 total accumulated points!

#3 Darryl Davis of Victoria leads the hunt for the Hot Stock Trucks thus far with a 45 point lead over defending champion, #4 Sean Hansen of El Campo (1530 vs. 1485). Davis only needs to stick with Hansen to provide a down to the wire season championship where Hansen needs to finish ahead of Davis continuously without any mechanical problems to take his third straight championship! Inez’s #43 Bob Ort holds back in third with 1360 total points.

The Super Stock class is witnessing an intensity in the ranks with the points race now coming down to 40 points between current point’s leader and defending champion #55 Vince Kacir of Port Lavaca and previous champion and veteran racer #12 Adam Perks of El Campo (1060, 1020). The division only races two times a night, so every place and position will count for these two gentlemen as will for third place #8 Todd Kidwell of Danevang who has accumulated 705.

The top three of the Limited Late Model division have been going at it with each other for the entirety of the season witnessing Victoria’s #65 Buck McFarlin finding his way in the lead spot by 55 with 1215 total points. Fellow Victoria native #81 Lawrence West is seeking one more championship before he straps up his belts as he holds second with 1160 ahead of Port Lavaca’s #27 Kevin Barnhart, holding third with 1080.

The division with the most nightly race teams seems to have a late season push to add a bit of excitement to the points race for the Texana Classic Dwarfs. Bay City’s #13 Mike Christians holds a commanding lead with a 1420 total points over Midfield’s #20 Greg Sexton who has 1065. Sexton has been running in the top of the field consistently these past few months, yet seems to need a little bit of good luck to run with a lot of Christian’s bad luck to take the 2004 season championship! Markham’s #24 Victor Vargas Jr. holds third with 945 where El Campo’s #79 Douglas Schmidt follows in fourth with 855.

The younger generation racers in the Mini Stock division hold each other in a wide spread of points with a domination being occupied by Goliad’s #8 Matthew Konvicka as he holds a 425 point lead over Halletsville’s #69 Cody Tesch. Victoria’s #5 Jamie Reha toils in third with 685, where Louise’s #95 Jacob Mann follows in fourth. All registered drivers in this division must meet an age requirement of less than 19 years of age with most of the drivers being at the age of 14 and 15!

The Pure Stock division is witnessing a rebound by two time series champion #47 Tony Mennuti of Port Lavaca as he holds the lead over Inez’s #43 Bob Ort by 85 points with 745 and 680 total accumulated points, respectively. Third place is being held by #55 Monty Chamberlain (Louise) with 605 while fourth is retained by #41 Mike Roark of Deer Park with 470. Rounding out the top five in this division is El Campo’s #93 Servando Chapa III with 455.

Next scheduled race night at Texana Raceway will Saturday, September 18 with points racing in the seven division race format resuming. Texana Raceway is located 2 miles East of Edna on Hwy. 111, left CR 412. Phone (361) 782 0200 for current events and any weather cancellations.
