7.5 METRIC BENT

How is the easiest way to mesure or tell if the axle tubes are bent?

Remove the housing from the car and leave the wheels/tires on. Measure the toe, rotate the housing 90 degrees (pinion pointing up or down), measure the toe again. Rotate again, measure again, etc. By doing this and keeping track of your measurements, you'll be able to tell roughly where the bend is and in what direction.

Be prepared - there's about a 98% chance that it's bent at least a little. It's hard to find a straight one.

Both awesome ideas.... We always jacked our trucks up look at the rotors and calipers right where the rotor goes through the caliper. Have one person rotate the tire while the other watches the rotor/caliper gap. As mentioned there is usally a little runout but not much. This will usually tell you if the axle itself is bent.

Good feedback as I just learn another trick...

easiest way IMO to check is to first check toe if that's ok then take the tires off and place the rear end on one jackstand and a floor jack on the other side. then stick a camber gauge on the side with the jackstand (place it actually on the machined face inbetween the studs rather then the cast part of the center) and raise/lower the floor jack till it reads 0 on the camber level then simply remove the guage and put it on the other side of the car in the same place, if it duplicates a 0 reading its perfect if not you have yourself a bent rearend. if you don't own a camber guage or can't borrow one than a cheap angle finder from the harware store will work too just make sure it's straight up and down. though keep in mind any of these tests are only as accuate as the axleshafts themselves and they have a tendancy to bend in the 7.5. it helps to put a good thick coat of hard glossy paint on the rearend as it will crack when bent and you can spot the problem areas quicker.
