Sikes wins IMCA Stock Car feature at Cardinal

by James White

EUNICE, N.M. -- With the IMCA modifieds not on the card tonight, because Lubbock Motor Speedway had their Labor Day Nationals, Sam Hodges, owner/promotor of Cardinal Motor Speedway, substituted Super Stocks on the line up.

Clouds loomed and the smell of rain in the air, the heat races started and all classes got the preliminaries behind them, but during the intermission period a light rain fell ,and officials had to rely on tow trucks and water trucks as well a the bomber class cars to get the track back to racing condition.

Only two classes were able to get their feature in before the clouds opened up once again.

Twelve IMCA Stock Cars lined up for the feature with #007 Chris Meyers and #7 Walter Freeman on the front row,the #007 Chris Meyers took the early lead with #7 Walter Freeman sliding to second. #16 Bubba Sikes was charging thru traffic fast and had assumed the lead by lap eight, leaving #007 Meyers to hold off #1 Kenneth Imler and #20 Cody Kays.

#9 Justin Graves got high out of turn four and tagged the front straight wall damaging front suspension, causing him to pull off the track and stalling on the exit lane bringing out a red flag and a restart. #16 Bubba Sikes lead the line to the green, and put a little distance on the field. #8 Bubba Locke left the track on lap ten with mechanincal problems.

A light sprinkle of rain started about lap sixteen, and by lap 18 had made the track a little slick, but talking to drivers the last two laps were really slick and sliding into turns three and four required setting the car up in the middle of the back straight. #16 Sikes kept his ride out front and took the checker.

The only other class to get the feature in due to rain saw a different name in the line up. Jimmy Breeding took a break from his IMCA ride to have a little fun in the 4 cylinder Pro-4 class, and driving the #3 car of Steve Huse.

The nine car feild had #24 Tony Vega and #53 Danny Lam head the field toward green, with #46 John Anderson getting to the front quickly from his second row start and #3 Jimmy Breeding driving the wheels off the #3 car charged after #46 Anderson and the two drivers raced hard for the lead. #46 John Anderson hadnt had quite the competition he had tonight and had to get a little dicy to keep #3 Breeding in check. While lapping the #58 Henry Trevinio, #3 Breeding got into trouble as #58 Trevinio came down into the leaders line and caused a tangle between the #3 car and himself, bringing out a red flag.

On the warm up lap to restart #3 Breeding had mechanical problems and had to pull off the track, moving the field behind him up one more position, #46 John Anderson took the lead on restart #24 Tony Vega had his hands full with #7 James White and drove hard to remain in the second position, on lap fifteen #7 James White found the inside of #24 Tony Vega to take the position.

#46 John Anderson went on to the checker collecting his 13th win of the season!
