Bob Shelton Day at THR set for September 18

One of the most revered high school football coaches in the state of Texas will be the Grand Marshall for Thunder Hill Raceway (THR) on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Kyle track. Bob Shelton, who’s been the head coach at Hays Consolidated for 37 years and is a member of the Texas High School Hall of Honor (the Hall of Fame for coaches), will join the THR staff and fans for the races and THR Games Championships on Sept. 18.

“We’re honored to have such a distinguished coach come to the track,” said THR Marketing/Media Director Chuck Licata. “I’ve known Coach Shelton through my involvement with high school football with KVET-AM 1300 and he’s a class act. His legacy is well documented, but we’re looking for THR fans to meet Bob Shelton ‘the person,’ as much as they’ll get to meet Bob Shelton ‘the football coach.’ Plus, Hays High School is right up the road, so we think it’s great to honor one of our own.”

Licata added, “We’d like to extend a special offer to our community on that night. Thus, any one who shows up with a Hays ISD identification card – whether they be a student, a teacher, an administrator, whatever – they will only have to pay six (6) dollars, half the price of our normal admission charge.”

Shelton has been involved in the coaching community for 41 years. He has taken a team to the state finals one time (in 1996) and was named Class 4A Coach of the Year by the Associated Press in 1997. Two years ago, Shelton was named to the Hall of Honor. Shelton has won over 240 games as a head coach and his teams have won over 62 percent of their games.

The on-track racing schedule calls for the Allison Legacys, the A-Line Auto Parts Street Stocks, the Capital City Trade & Technical School Hobby Stocks and the THR Grand Stocks. The THR Games Championships will be held that night, as six two-person teams who qualified earlier in the season will compete for a grand prize package of over $2,000, including two “Pocket Rocket” mini motorcycles courtesy of JJ’s Pocket Bikes of Round Rock.

Thunder Hill Raceway is a 3/8-mile asphalt oval track located at exit 210 (Yarrington Road) off IH-35 in Kyle. The racing season at THR is March through October. The track is just 10 minutes north of San Marcos and 15 minutes south of Austin. Interested parties can check out the track’s new web site (www.thunderhillraceway.com) or can call the track at (512) 262.1352.
