BEEP....BEEP....Watch out here comes the Road Runners! Michael Odom and Roy Bernal were paired together on the front row followed by Ann Freudiger, Ken Jones, Randy Frautschi, Mark Mathias and Greg Rohmer. Bernal took the early lead. Mathias soared from the back of the flock to second place in just one lap. A quick yellow flag waved when Frautschi came to a stop in Turn 4. On Lap 3, Mathias flew around Bernal for the lead. When the checkered flag dropped, it was Mathias getting a bird's eye view of victory circle. Bernal, Frautschi, Rohmer and Odom filled out the top five finishing positions.

In the Sportsman division, things got off to a shaky start when Jamie Evans, Nathan Davis, George Lucas and David Schooman tangled on the frontstretch. On the double-file restart, Vince Trietch and Dwayne Markgraf paced the field to the green flag followed by Garfield Shanklin, Craig Crawley, Tater Mason and Eric Knudtson. Trietch took the early lead, but was overtaken by Mason and Justin Oates on Lap 8. That was all for naught, as the caution lights lit up for Crawley, and Trietch was once again back in his top spot. When racing resumed, history immediately repeated itself, Mason and Oates were running 1st & 2nd on Lap 9. Two aggressive drivers, both wanting to win....it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what happened next. Yes, the two made contact which sent Mason spinning and both were sent to the back of the pack. This handed the lead to Kenny Hurley on a golden platter with Knudtson, Trietch, Markgraf and Robert Mayberry lined up right behind him. One lap later, the dreaded engine gremlin reared its ugly head and put an end to Oates night. When green flag racing returned, Knudtson was all over Hurley and then some. The yellow flag was displayed when Steven Ramzinski spun out. At this point, the race was shortened by five laps. Knudtson pushed it to the limit, but had to settle for the second position. Hurley motored to his first win of the season. Trietch finished in the third position with Mason and Mayberry next to cross the stripe.

There was much thrashing and bashing going on before the Late Models even set one wheel into motion for their feature event. Let's shift into REVERSE and back up to LM heat race #1. Jason Smith blew a radiator hose going into Turn 1 and hit the wall. Slipping, sliding and crashing in the fluid left behind were Mark Ackerman, Danny Garcia and Michael Lampton. Garcia was in the borrowed and now heavily damaged #13 racer of John Salazar due to a motor problem with his own racecar (#97). Needless to say, Garcia and company worked feverishly to pull the engine out of the #13 car and drop it into the #97 car for the feature race. Smith's damage was so severe that he was forced to start the feature race in his back-up car (#37). Lampton's night came to an end due to this incident. Now, let's shift into DRIVE....Seven late models were on hand for their 40 lap feature event. Sitting on the pole was Mike Balzer followed by Larry Bendele, Jesse Salazar, James Cole, Garcia, Smith and Jim Creech. As the flagman waved the green flag, Bendele and Cole took off like two bats out of Hades with Balzer falling into the third position. Bendele and Cole were the class act of the field and treated the racefans to several exciting lead changes. The last one happening with just 11 laps remaining. Bendele got loose coming off Turn 2 and that was all Cole needed to take the lead....and the BIG win! Bendele finished second followed by Balzer, Garcia and Salazar. Cole and Smith are now tied for first place in the points' chase.

Making their third appearance of the year at SAS were the Texas Asphalt Modified Series. The top five starters for this event were Billy Becka, Jerry Schild, Joey Heinaman, John Paul Kliewer and Bruce Beddoe. Becka showed the way until Lap 15 when he abruptly exited into the pits. Schild then assumed the top spot with Chris Swenson, Beddoe, John Heil and Heinaman inhaling his fumes. Five laps later, Heinaman experienced race ending mechanical woes. Just shy of the halfway marker, the red flag came out when Jeff Smith nailed the Turn 1 wall. The remainder of the race was clean and green. Schild was first to see the checkered flag and enjoyed a smacking good time in victory circle with the Lone Star Light trophy girls. Heil, Swenson, Beddoe and Lawrence Mikulencak were the next contenders to cross the finish line.

Congratulations to all of our winners!

WAS IT A FULL MOON? I think at one point after the heat races almost every LM crew was working on their cars. I thought it was good to see all the help from the different classes.

The engine problem we suffered seems to be fatal, but luckily we have a short block ready to go.

CONGRATS to James, Kenny & Mark!
