tqj3
Release: April 21, 2003 Bubba Naumann Takes Opening Round of Late Model Challenge at Mobile International Speedway Saturday Mobile, Alabama -- Austin's Bubba Naumann won the first race in the Late Model Challenge Series presented by Apollo Aviation at Mobile International Speedway on Saturday night. Naumann qualified fourth and ran near the front for most of the race. On lap 130 the caution flags flew, and on the restart 2001 Snowball Derby and 2002 Texas Big Shot winner Wayne Anderson of Wildwood, Florida, took the lead with Naumann's Chevrolet Monte Carlo in second. After another caution on lap 134 for debris on the front straightaway, the green flag dropped on lap 138 and Naumann dove under Anderson as the cars entered turn one. By the time they had hit the back straightaway, Naumann was the clear leader and ran the last 12 laps in the lead to take the win. Most of the top late model drivers in the Southeast were on hand, though Eddie Mercer blew an engine and didn't make the race. Besides Anderson, the field included the last two Kia Series champions, Larry Raines and Dale Little; along with William Wambles, Ronnie Sanders, Lee Hansard, Donald Long and Charlie Bradberry.
