HMP GOING OLD SCHOOL FOR HOT ROD HAPPENING

Houston, TX (May 1, 2012) -While Houston Motorsports Park may not be your grandpas's drag strip anymore, on Saturday, May 5, it just might feel like it.

HMP will host Hot Rod Happening on one of the nation's premier 1/8-mile drag strip, where the night will take you back to the 1950s with Nostalgia Drag Racing complete with an old school flagman to send the cars down the track instead of the light tree.

In addition, fans will be treated to racing in the wicked Pro Mods, where $4,000 and bragging rights are up for grabs, along with the fastest street legal cars in Texas.

“This is going to be a great night for all involved – racers and fans,” said John Mandabach, vice president and general manager of Houston Motorsports Park. “With a car show and some nostalgic style drag racing, it should be a night to remember.”

Plus, fans will enjoy a Classic Car Show – that includes everything from gassers, front engine dragsters, coupes, sedans, rat rods, t-buckets, altereds and roadsters, with an awards ceremony to happen right on the drag strip.

Gates are set to open at 9 a.m., for everyone, with judging for the Car Show set to begin at 9:30 a.m. Racing starts at noon.

The day will also feature on site vendors and free games for adults and kids. As always, there will also be $1 hot dogs, $1 cokes and $1 beer.

“HMP will be the place to be on Saturday, May 5th,” Mandabach said. “What better way to spend the day then with family, friends and fast cars? I don't believe there is one.”

Tickets are $15 for adult general admission, and that comes with free parking. Children 12 and under are free.

HMP is one of the fastest 1/8-mile all concrete dragstrips in the country, with speeds at over 190 miles per hour, big burnouts and huge wheelstands at almost every event. The entire track, return road and safety walls are concrete. It features two turn off roads, plus state of the art timing and scoring equipment. The spectator area is 20 feet above the track surface, enabling fans a view from the burnout box through the finish line and to the entire shutdown area.

The facility was built adjacent to Houston Motor Speedway, which has achieved motorsports industry acclaim as the Americas' premier 3/8-mile high-banked asphalt oval short track.

This complex is situated in a park like setting inside Beltway 8 on the North East side of Houston, only 20 minutes from downtown and 20 minutes from Bush Intercontinental Airport.
