Justin Oates Maintaining Lead In The Sunbelt ShorTrack Division

8/4/2004

SAN ANTONIO SPEEDWAY - Following a challenging feature race this weekend, 17-year-old Justin Oates managed to hold on to his leads in the Sportsman Division at San Antonio Speedway and the NASCAR ShorTrack Division in the Sunbelt Region. The Sportsman division drivers put on a heck of a show last Saturday night, and once again they did not disappoint the fans. Justin’s heat race win and fourth-place feature finish narrowed his regional lead somewhat, but his CPI is still .0171 ahead of Doug McComb from Irwindale Speedway.

Craig Crawley led the field to the green flag, followed by Dwayne Markgraf, Tom Casey, Tater Mason, Marcus Bellino, Eric Knudtson and Justin Oates. On Lap 2, the caution lights lit up when Jamie Evans spun out and collected newcomer Nathan Davis. When racing resumed, Casey took the lead away from Crawley. Bellino, who is running a limited schedule, took the advantage on Lap 6. Once again the yellow flag flew when John Casey, Jr. spun out, while Evans simultaneously came to a stop on the backstretch. On the restart, Bellino was leading, with Casey, Oates, Markgraf and Garfield Shanklin lined up right on his tail. In less than a lap, Bellino had a rearview mirror full of Oates. Oates was relentless, and both drivers were intent on winning. With three laps remaining, the inevitable happened . . . the two of them touched coming off of Turn 4. Both drivers inherited a trip to the back of the pack, and Casey assumed the lead. The racing action really got hot and heavy as Bellino and Oates “sliced and diced” their way back to the front. Casey hung on for his very first feature win. Bellino recovered enough to finish in the second spot, followed by Shanklin, Oates and Crawley.

In other racing action at San Antonio Speedway, James Cole claimed his first feature win in the NASCAR Late Model class. Greg Rohmer visited the Winner’s Circle for the fourth time this season in the Road Runner class, and Kelly Earnhardt prevailed in the Women on Wheels (WOW) feature event.
