Gray checks out at Cardinal

by James White

EUNICE, N.M. -- Nineteen IMCA Modifieds on hand for a perfect Saturday night of racing action #10 Shane Gray and #5 Billy Johnson bring the field to green with #10 Gray having the advantage into turn 3 over #5 Johnson , but a tangle in turn 1, between #53 J.D. White, #16 Bob Sikes, and #17m Roy Don Mason brought out a red and a restart. #17m and #53 had to retire moving some drivers up in the line up for the restart.

On the first restart #5 Billy Johnson didn't have as smooth a start as the first try , he spun in turn one causing a domino effect on the rest of the field that collected #21 Jimmy Breeding and #101 Bradley Smith, Smith was able to continue but damage to #21 Jimmy Breeding was too severe to race. The field will be restarted one more time.

The second restart had #5 Billy Johnson at the end of the field, which moved #101 Butch Reid to the front, with #10 Shane Gray holding the pole position. Yet out of turn four on this go around the #8 Ken Couch and #16 Bob Sikes collided to bring out yet another red flag. The damage to Couch was too much to continue while #16 Sikes was able to get back in line.

The third restart went off with a good clean lap and the race was underway. #10 Shane Gray took the lead and left #101 Butch Reid and #86 Brian flowers to duke it out for second. By lap 10 #101 Butch Reid had to leave the track with mechanical problems ,and the #16 Bob Sikes had taken the second position from Brian Flowers, and slower cars were beginning to be lapped. #10 Shane Gray was walking away with this feature while #85 Neal Flowers and #44 Trent Crawford were moving up to get into the top four.
