USLMA Race Results for 7/31/04

Recommended Posts

What a race!! Saturday night in Pueblo, Colorado provided for could be called the best race of the year. 24 cars attended Saturday's event, again breaking the record for most late models at I-25 Speedway. 4 states were represented, and all the USLMA heavy hitters were there to take on the high banks of I-25 Speedway.

All three heat races, and the B-main were run with no caution flags, but unfortunately there were a few yellows thrown in the A-main and some appeared somewhat serious. The first was for the wreck of Albuquerque hot shoe, JR Fanelli and former modified stand-out Jay Fields as they got together with the front stretch wall. Fortunately, both drivers walked away. Later in the event, Chad Stutzman and Robbie McCabe had a very similar looking wreck, but Stutzman came away much worse as he careened into the pit exit, blocking the ramp for other drivers.

Meanwhile, Jim Sikes Jr. had made his way to the front from his 2nd place starting spot and was being chased by Jeff Larsen, John Webb and Mike Hathaway. Hathaway started 13th after winning the B-main and by the 3/4 point in the race, Hathaway had worked himself into the 2nd place position. With 6 laps to go, Sikes got together with a lapped car, causing considerable damage to the right front of his A-A Towing Monte Carlo. Sikes was able to soldier on, but the car was obviously not capable of his earlier dominating style. On the restart, Hathaway pressed inside of Sikes, and the two ran side by side for one lap, before another caution flag flew. Sikes was placed in front on the final green flag, and was able to hold off Hathaway for the win.

The race for the 2004 Championship looks to be narrowing down to three drivers at this time: John Webb, Mike Hathaway, and Jim Sikes. The trio have built a 37 point gap between themselves and 4th place point man, Ron O'Neil. O'Neil is tied with Jeff Larsen now for 4th, and Bob Howard fell to 6th in the standings. Only nine drivers are now eligible for the 100 point perfect attendance award, opening up the opportunity for somebody with limited attendance to get into the top-10 money positions by seasons end.
