By: Neil Upchurch, Texas Pro Sedans – Race Director

Corpus Christi, Texas - The Texas Pro Sedans series contested one of their most competitive TPS races yet at the ¼ mile high banked asphalt, C.C. Motor Speedway.

The TPS touring series visited C.C. Motor Speedway for the second of three 2004 races on Saturday night, July 31st. The Texas Pro Sedans four cylinder stock cars played to a very large grandstand crowd with 15 of the 16 car field taking the green flag for the 30 lap TPS feature race.

The event consisted of 2 laps of Qualifying Time Trials which saw the fastest time posted by former TPS Champion and current point leader Donnie Moore of Hutto. He turned a 15.650 second lap in his VW Scirocco. His time was only .90 seconds ahead of Corpus Christi’s Lalo Leal who’s best lap was 15.810 in his Ford Mustang. Leal was the winner of the first C.C. Motor Speedway TPS race on May 29. At that event, he established the current TPS/CCMS 15.560 which remains unbroken.

In the 30 Lap Feature Race, Leal took the lead over Moore on turn two of the green flag lap. The two veteran TPS drivers dueled with their fast four cylinder race cars followed closely by Bill LaBarge in his BMW and an impressive Jamie Garner in his 2001 VW Sedan. Then Donnie Moore’s VW Scirocco brushed the wall on unlucky lap 13 of the “full moon racing night”. At the same time, Jamie Garner retired from the race with mechanical problems. The event was slowed four times by yellow caution periods. Following TPS rules, yellow flag laps were not scored to assure spectators a full 30-lap green-flag race. One of the yellows involved LaBarge who spun his BMW. Lalo Leal won the TPS race by a healthy margin of 6.60 seconds over the eventual runner-up Bill LaBarge.

A total of six Texas Pro Sedan drivers completed the race on the lead lap. Recording 30 laps were Mike Knotts in his VW Scirocco in third, Jesse Sandoval in his new Ford Pinto placed fourth, Sergio Hexsel of San Antonio was in fifth place in his new VW Rabbit. Rounding out in sixth place was Ariel Arredondo of Corpus Christi in his Ford Probe.

The TPS Championship Points closed ranks at the top of the standings list with Donnie Moore now leading Bill LaBarge by only seven points who leads Lalo Leal by only thirteen points going into the next Texas Pro Sedans race which will be held at Thunder Hill Raceway on Saturday night, August 7.
