Texana Raceway Park Results

July 2, 2011

On a hot July 4th weekend, around 5:45pm to 6’oclock suddenly a flood of race cars pour into Texana Raceway Park for some racing action. After the heat races concluded it was time for feature racing action with the 60+ car count that had converged on the sacred grounds of TRP.

In mini-stock action Ethan Hoover, after a several race absence, took the early lead and found the track to his liking. Christopher Burnett met the wall in the #2 turn early in the event, which sidelined him, and Tyler Dvorak exited as well shortly there after. After a caution, Hoover once again went to the lead with Justin Sickle giving chase, but as the laps continued Hoover was able to distance himself and carried the lead to the checker.

As has proven in each race with the Texana Classic Dwarfs, excitement and action throughout the field is a guarantee. July 2nd was no exception. Joseph Snow took the early lead. In short order Greg Sexton Sr. took the lead and Shandy Price got in the mix with the group as well. It was visibly obvious that Sexton Sr. had set his car up for the feature race conditions as he could enter the turn almost straight with deep entry and then begin turning the car with the accelerator keeping the car nice and smooth through each turn giving him significant corner exit launch speed. Once in the lead Sexton Sr. was not going to relinquish. Along the way Frank Fruia had moved up into the mix along with Victor Vargas. There was tremendous action throughout the field which always makes it difficult to keep up with this group. Sexton Sr. held on to take the win.

It was time for school in the Street Stocks and on this night it was obvious that Brian King was the teacher. With King lined up on the outside of Row 1, and Tony Blankenship on the pole, the green dropped and King was gone. Chris Shafer made it up to 3rd and followed Blankenship for several laps and eventually moved to 2nd. However, King was checking out on everyone and had his car handling beautifully through the turns and able to rocket out down the straights. The Street Stocks went green the entire race. Interestingly in the race, was how all competitors have stepped up their programs with all being fast. Even under green King was able to only lap one car during the feature, which is a true testament of how the cars are running. King led the feature from the start of school until the release bell rang.

With a huge race just down the road in the Houston area, the Limited Modifieds carried in 15 competitive warriors. This night was most definitely the Vince Louden show. Louden took the lead to start the race. Mickey Helms was dialing in a car for a friend, but you’d have thought he had been wheeling it all season. Helms was in 2nd, lost several positions at one point from going too high in the turn and then battled back to 2nd which is where he finished. Through cautions and other events though, Louden was flawless and hit his marks lap after lap after lap. Also notable was the other Vince “Kacir”. Kacir was a top contender the entire event and was placing the heat on Helms for the 2nd position near the end. A really good race among all in the class with a good group of cars on hand.

In Hot Stock Truck action, Jason Bloom went to the lead at the drop of the green. Justin “Peanut” Airhart filed into 2nd, but had difficulty later in the race with the slick conditions and dropped back. IN the mean time, Mickey Harvel and Justin Bloom moved along into the front pack. But Jason held the lead the entire time and took the feature win.

Having had some recent withdrawals recently, the fans were treated to some fast modified action this night. Due for some good luck after losing his motor in the limited modifieds, Wade Moyer was looking for a win. Jesse Manning took the initial lead with Moyer, Corey Babbit and Rory Jordan filed in behind. Moyer went to the lead early in the race. Moyer was able to lay down consistent laps in spit of pressure from Babbit and Manning at different stages. At one point Mannings car got loose, he had to go to the back, but still muscled his way back up to 2nd place before it was all over. Along the way Babbit’s car suffered apparent mechanical issues which caused an early departure for him. Moyer carried his 14m modified to the win. Also noteworthy was three separate sponsorships of $100 each to the class. Jordon Aire owned by Rory Jordan, Ken Bulsterbaum, and Auto Repair Unlimited & JTC Motors owned by Jesse Manning all offered $100 each. $100 was added for the winners share. The other two $100 prize additions were done by lottery style drawing as the modifieds entered the track, so the drivers would not know. There end up being $100 extra to 6th for visiting Jason Borlace and $100 extra to 8th for visiting Corey Babbit. That was a nice consultation prize for each of those long distance traveling competitors
