Double D racing
can anybody tell me if 8.2 and 8.5 ring and pinion are the same? GM book said yes but I D K...Looking for a 3.55 for the 8.2.but they do not list that ratio for the 8.5... The 8.2 is in a early 70's malibu. jwmbishop
Not sure but I think the 8.5 gears will fit an 8.2 but not the other way around (center diameter issue). verify this before you believe it!

Danielsen Motorsports
they are not the same. they offer the same ratios for each rearend but they take different ring and pinions.

The center bore of the ring - if too large it will still fit the flange of the carrier - if too small it can't be hammered on! Just talked to my guy that used to do all my gear work - he said NO. The gear will go on, the holes will line up - but the bolts will now carry all the load. So as Danielson says... they won't "fit". Get the right gear for the carrier or risk exploding your gear set. The limitation in ratios is just because they did not make that specific ratio for that carrier.
Danielsen Motorsports
You should be able to find a good selection 8.2 gears so try a different gear manufactor like richmond gears.
