The Bullring, Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s NASCAR-sanctioned 3/8-mile asphalt oval, will present its season-ending event this weekend. The annual Open Comp will take place on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 5-6) and will include: Super Late Models, USAC Midgets, Late Models, Modifieds, Legend Cars, Chargers, Bombers and Bandoleros.

Making the long haul from San Antonio will be Modified veteran James Cole and up and coming young gun Anthony Gordon. This race weekend is attracting racers in the various classes from as far as Canada. Cole and Gordon will be competing in a 75 lap modified feature Saturday night.

I will post updates here as they happen in practice, qualifying and the race results.

Let's all wish them good luck as they represent all of us back here.

Update from Thursday night has both Cole and Gordon getting in some practice laps. Gordon is doing a good job getting the feel for the Bullring, while Cole, a multi-time racer here, is fine-tuning his setup. At thursday night practice they had 28 modifieds, and the pits are full of all classes of cars.

On a side note, Jeff Russell of Boise, Idaho received extensive injuries during an afternoon practice session earlier in the week.Russell drives a Supermodified, and evidently broke a RF spindle and crashed heavily into the wall.

Russell had to be cut out of the car, and was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas with a fractured vertebrae in his neck, a broken arm, and leg, some broken ribs, and some bruised lungs, but he is awake and talking. Russell has already undergone brain surgery so doctors could remove some blood clots, along with fixing a couple of bleeds.

Although we don't know Jeff Russell, he can use our thoughts and prayers.

29 Modifieds made qualifying attempts this evening. James Cole sits 5th, and Anthony Gordon 13th.

Two heats races this evening will determine the starting positions for the first 16 starting spots.

Everyone else will run a last chance race tomorrow to determine the rest of the starting field.

Heat race results saw James Cole finish 2nd after starting 3rd. He was all over the leader until the car started spitting water.

Anthony Gordon started 11th and finished 6th. Solid run for his first time racing at the bullring.

Cole will start the feature on the inside of the second row, and Gordon will start inside of the 6th row.
