August 24, 2010 – This Saturday and Sunday night, open wheel Dirt Modified fans will get to see one of the best weekends of racing at two California tracks, Antioch Speedway and Merced Speedway. Oval Motorsports, which operates both facilities, is hosting the inaugural UMP Modified West Coast Nationals. The mud will fly as the ground-pounding Modifieds storm into action on Saturday night, August 28th at Antioch Speedway, where drivers will battle it out on the fast 3/8th mile clay oval, all in search of the $3,500 first place prize. The action on Saturday will feature a full program of Dirt Modified racing. Drivers will be looking to secure a spot in the 35 lap feature, which pays a minimum of $300 to start, with the hopes of getting their car in victory lane and getting their hands on the cold-hard cash at the end of the night.

On Sunday night, August 29th, the action will move 100 miles to the southeast, where yet another $3,500 top prize will await the victor at Merced Speedway. Merced Speedway was “reborn” by Oval Motorsports’ John Soares and crew. Soares took over operation of the previously defunct speedway and immediately went to work in making facility upgrades and re-configuring the racetrack. The fast bullring is now ¼ mile in length and has produced some great racing action since re-opening on July 18th. Many California Modified drivers have visited the track, after the West Coast Nationals race was announced, to get familiar with the new configuration. Even in the week leading up to the West Coast Nationals, crews have been hard at work upgrading the facility, with new fencing, an additional concession stand, track signal lights and additional bathrooms. The stage is now set for one awesome weekend of Modified racing!

The unique two-day event pays drivers two separate purses, allowing one driver to possibly earn $7,000, if they can win both races. On top of that, Oval Motorsports has put up a $1,000 bonus to any driver who can win them both. The top stars in Modified racing will be ready to battle as the Northern California drivers face off against the Central Valley drivers. But beware of the stars from Southern California….and don’t forget about the money-hungry racers from the Pacific Northwest. If that’s not enough, drivers are expected from as far away as New Mexico and beyond. It will truly be a battle of the Best of the West!

One driver looking to claim victory will be Las Cruces, New Mexico’s Stormy Scott. Scott will be making his second trip to California this year, as he made in first ever visit to Antioch Speedway on June 19th and took home the $5,000 prize money that night. On this trip, Scott will be looking for more cash but also UMP national points. Both events of the West Coast Nationals will be UMP regional and national point events. Scott currently sits 5th in the nation in UMP Modified points, where the Champion earns a $20,000 bonus from DIRTCar. The West Coast Nationals gives Scott two chances to earn some bonus points, as the UMP point structure awards more points to shows that have more cars in competition. Scott currently has 16 feature wins this year and is approximately 35 points behind current point leader, Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Indiana, who has 18 wins.
