TAMS at SAS race report, 5/8/04

Congratulations to #23 Jeff Smith from La Vernia, TX who set a blistering pace to take his first TAMS win at San Antonio Speedway. Smith started on the pole and led the race wire to wire.

 

#14 James Cole from San Antonio set the fast time in qualifying with a 19.40, then drew #6 to invert the top six qualifiers.

 

#23 Jeff Smith and #75 Matt Brune led the field to the green with Smith taking the lead into the first turn and Brune falling into the 2nd position.

 

The 50 lap feature was fast paced with only 2 cautions. The first came on lap 23, when #14 Cole collected a lapped car entering turn 3. The second and final caution came on lap 25 with #25 Larry Smith losing a drive shaft.

 

Points leader #71 Joey Heinaman was sidelined for qualifying with a bent valve in practice. Heinaman repaired the power plant and started 18th only to have engine failure again after moving up to 6th place on lap 26.

 

#48 Chris Swenson took over the points lead with a 3rd place finish.

 

The final laps of the race were tight fought with #75 Brune, #48 Swenson, #18 Beddoe & #5 Schild rounding out the top five.

 

The “Hard Charger” was awarded to #18 Bruce Beddoe, who started in the 12th spot & advanced 8 positions to finish 4th.
