Flawless Hughes nets fifth USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series feature win at Tri-State Speedway

Pocola, Oklahoma (June 10, 2010) – Jason Hughes is tough to beat no matter where he starts, but when he draws the pole it’s practically a foregone conclusion.

Thursday night at the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla., Hughes garnered the AFCO Pole Award then redrew the pole position for the main event, but the win for the 35-year-old from Westville, Okla., was anything but easy.

The USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series kicked off the first night of the 4th Annual USMTS Southern Speedweek with a field of top-notch dirt Modified aces invading the 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval near Fort Smith, Ark., to contend for the $2,000 top prize.

Hughes led all 30 laps of the WIX Filters “A” Main, but three cautions kept the field close and the outcome in doubt for the duration of the contest as nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock and last year’s runner-up, Ryan Gustin, kept the pressure on Hughes from start to finish.

Gustin got by Shryock on the sixth lap to take over the second spot, but Shryock muscled his way back in front of Gustin five laps later as the two continuously waited for Hughes to make a mistake.

He never did.

It was the fifth win and ninth top-five finish in ten starts this season for Hughes, who expanded his wide margin in the points battle in his quest to repeat as the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series champion.

Shryock held off Gustin for the runner-up paycheck while Johnny Bone Jr. grabbed fourth and Brandon Henry took the fifth position. Sixth through tenth, respectively, were John O Whittington, Randy Timms, Steve Holzkamper, Tommy Weder Jr. and Jimmy Ray.

The USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series is in action for the 4th Annual USMTS Southern Speedweek this Thursday-Sunday, June 10-13. With four straight nights at four different tracks, nearly $70,000 in prize money up for grabs and a possible $8,000 to win, the best of the best in dirt Modified racing are expected from the north, south, east and west.

At the end of this weekend’s quadruple-header, the top 10 in USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series points – plus all other drivers with perfect attendance – will be qualified for the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Championship.
