USMTS Southern Speedweek set for lift-off Thursday

FORT SMITH, Ark. (June 7) – The USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series kicks back into high gear for the 4th Annual USMTS Southern Speedweek this Thursday-Sunday, June 10-13.

With four straight nights at four different tracks, nearly $70,000 in prize money up for grabs and a possible $8,000 to win, the best of the best in dirt Modified racing are expected from the north, south, east and west.

Each of the four blockbuster events will pay $2,000 to win and a minimum $250 to start.

Defending USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series champion Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., leads the current points standings and will be looking to solidify himself in the rankings, along with a solid place in ‘The Hunt.’

At the end of this weekend’s quadruple-header, the top 10 in USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series points – plus all other drivers with perfect attendance – will be qualified for the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Championship.

Other drivers expected to challenge for the checkered flag this weekend include Kelly Shryock, Rodney Sanders, Morgan Bagley, Bumper Jones, Randy Timms, Dereck Ramirez, Steve Holzkamper, Zack VanderBeek, Ryan Gustin, Shane Hebert, Steven Whiteaker Jr., Tommy Weder Jr., John O Whittington, Grant Junghans, Chase Junghans Rory Jordan, Troy Seidl, Tracy Denby Jr., Jerry Standifer, Melvin Pilcher, Johnny Scott, Jon Tesch, Ben Stephens, Dustin Hyde, Lee Patton, Garrett Durrett and many others.

On Thursday, the USMTS Southern Speedweek road trip takes the teams and travelers to the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla., then on to the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La., on Friday. Saturday finds the throttle-mashing speed merchants in Kilgore, Texas, at the Lonestar Speedway before wrapping up the weekend at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., on Sunday.

THURSDAY, JUNE 10 … TRI-STATE SPEEDWAY, POCOLA, OK

The action gets underway on Thursday, June 10, with the third trip in three years to the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla. The inaugural event in 2008 saw Eddie Martin hold off nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock and Jason Hughes for the win. Hughes bounced back for the win last year ahead of Johnny Bone Jr. and William Gould.

Current track points leader Lonnie Robins is expected to challenge for the win on his home turf, along with fellow Tri-State regulars Brent Holman, Brandon Wilson, Randy Henson, Eric Beshoner, George Martin, Brandon Henry, Chris Ross, Kyle Schmidt, Joe Duvall and others.

Pit gates will open at 4 p.m., grandstand gates open at 5, hot laps begin at 6:45 and the first heat race takes the green flag at 7:30.

Also on the racing card will be Mini Stocks and Road Runners.

The Tri-State Speedway is a 3/8-mile high-banked dirt oval located 1.6 miles west of the Arkansas-Oklahoma State line on US 271, then 0.3 mile north on W. Race Track Rd. For race day information, call 918-436-2914 or visit www.tri-statespeedway.com online.

FRIDAY, JUNE 11 … BOOTHILL SPEEDWAY, GREENWOOD, LA

Race fans and drivers alike will find a newly-refurbished facility under the leadership of Jim Burford with a racier, shorter but wider quarter-mile oval when they trek to the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La., on Friday, June 11.

If you liked Boothill Speedway before, wait until you see it now. Today more than ever, if you wanna race, The Hill’s the place!

One year ago, a caution flag with five laps to go doomed Kelly Shryock as it erased a seven-second lead and allowed Jason Hughes to muscle his way to his third Southern Speedweek win.

Hughes also bagged the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series main event in the series debut at Boothill in 2007, while Jack Sullivan won last April.

Several drivers with their fair share of USMTS racing in their background have already turned laps at the newly-configured oval. Cade Dillard, Mike Washburn, Micheal Knighten, B.J. Robinson, Morgan Bagley, Micah Thompson, Robert Young, Bradley Randolf, Larry Clevenger, Micheal Easley and more are expected Friday night.

Pits open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and the first heat race is slated to hit the track at 8 p.m.

Limited Mods and Factory Stocks will also join the action-packed festivities.

The Boothill Speedway is a 1/3-mile semi-banked clay oval located west of Shreveport on I-20 to the Carthage-Morningsport Exit #3, then 0.2 mile north, then east on McGee Rd. For more information, call 318-840-RACE or check out www.boothillspeedway.org online.

SATURDAY, JUNE 12 … LONESTAR SPEEDWAY, KILGORE, TX

On Saturday, June 12, the Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, will host the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series for the first time on the third night of the 4th Annual Southern Speedweek.

Some tough competitors have been circling the “Fastest Half-Mile Dirt Track in Texas” on Saturday nights, including Justin Ingalls, Jason Ingalls, Jeremy Ishmael, G.W. Egbert, Billy Jack Brutchin, Kelly Gorman, Weldon Meroney, Jason Tiner and others.

Pit gates will open at 3:00, grandstands open at 4, hot laps begin at 6:15 and the first green flag will be unfurled at 7 p.m.

Limited Mods will also be on the card racing for $700 to win and $50 to start while Factory Stocks battle for $200 to win and $30 to start.

The Lonestar Speedway is a 1/2-mile high-banked dirt oval located just off of I-20 at Exit 583, then 0.5 mile north on SR 135, then 1.0 mile east on FM 1252, then 0.5 mile south. For more information call 903-986-9731 or check out www.lonestarspeedway.com.

SUNDAY, JUNE 13 … ARK-LA-TEX SPEEDWAY - VIVIAN, LA

Sunday, June 13, will find the tireless touring titans at Gene Boyter’s Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La. In the first-ever USMTS Southern Series show here in 2008, first-time USMTS competitor Duke Whiseant took home the hardware over Johnny Bone Jr., Jason Hughes, Tommy Weder Jr. and Steve Holzkamper. Hughes is the defending race winner.

Local aces Odie Green, Justin Sprayberry, Mike Washburn, Dick Haynes, Dwayne Brown, Greg Garrett, Lee Patton, Tippy Bickham, Jason Ingalls, Michael Robertson and others are expected to make a statement in protecting their home turf against the invading USMTS forces.

Billy Collette from Jackson, Miss., has also thrown his hat into the ring for Sunday’s race.

Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstand gates swing open at 5, hot laps take to the track at 6:30 and the racing action kicks off at 7 p.m.
