SAN ANTONIO SPEEDWAY DRIVERS AGAINST KIDS’ STREET RACING!

San Antonio, TX – May 7, 2003 – Several San Antonio Speedway NASCAR drivers will be making an appearance at Memorial High School on Friday, May 14, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. to promote a new campaign called “San Antonio Speedway Drivers Against Kids’ Street Racing.”

The drivers will be showing their race cars, and they will also be speaking to the juniors and seniors at Memorial concerning their driving experiences, both on and off the track. Appearing at the show and addressing the students will be the following drivers from San Antonio Speedway: James Cole (22), the driver of NASCAR Late Model #14 who is currently working on his Bachelor’s Degree in Business at UTSA; Jason Smith (27), the driver of NASCAR Late Model #28 who is a District Manager for Shell Xpress Lube; and Justin Oates (17), the driver of Sportsman #0 who is a junior at LaVernia High School.

“Getting the message out to kids that racing belongs at the track and not on the streets is important to me right now,” says James Cole, “because of the increasing number of tragedies over the past couple of years due to street racing. And I feel that kids will listen better to someone my age.” James adds, “I will be talking to the kids about wrecking my car at 145 mph and walking away unharmed due to all of the safety equipment I have in my car. It’s very different from what can happen on the streets.”

San Antonio Speedway staff and officials will also attend the event and will hold a drawing for the students to win free passes to the races on Saturday, May 22. The speedway plans to continue its efforts with this campaign at various functions and schools throughout the summer and into the fall.

Coordinating this event for Memorial High School is Vice-Principal Hope Garza. She is very enthusiastic about this unique approach to addressing the students about the dangers of street racing here in San Antonio.

Memorial High School is in the Edgewood Independent School District and is located at 1227 Memorial Street, off Culebra Road near St. Mary’s University. San Antonio Speedway is a NASCAR sanctioned track located at 14901 State Highway 16 South. Racing action takes place at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday nights from March through October. Visit the San Antonio Speedway website at www.sanantoniospeedway.com for more information.

Today's San Antonio Speedway Drivers Against Kids' Street Racing event at Memorial High School was a big success. First of all, I'd like to give our special thanks to the drivers who showed up with their cars and spoke to the students . . . James Cole, Jason Smith, Justin Oates, Kelly Earnhardt, Jesse Salazar and John Salazar. Chuck Collins, FASCAR President, was also there, along with some of the track staff and officials. THANKS!

And secondly, I am pleased to announce that we had good media presence at the show. Cable 9 did extensive filming and several driver interviews. We also had coverage from Fox 29, KENS, and Channel 41, so be sure to watch your local news' stations tonight. I understand Channel 5 (KENS) has already run something earlier (5P), but I was not home in time to see it. Maybe they will run it again tonight at 10P. The San Antonio Express-News also ran an article about it in today's paper.

We are working on more shows now. Hopefully, the drivers will help us continue spreading this important message.
