Houston Raceway Park in Baytown will once again be the hosting the last big show in the region for 2009.

The United States Modified Touring Series Southern Series finale will headline the weekend as the 3rd Annual Texas Winter Nationals rolls into the paved pits of what might be the best 1/4 mile dirt track oval facility anywhere!

National Open Wheel Modified stars Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa and Jason Hughes of Westville, Oklahoma will have to deal with Texans like Bobby Malchus (Dallas), Morgan Bagley (Longview), Rodney Sanders (Amarillo) and Chris Henigan (Marshall) as well as Houston greats like Howard Willis and John Whittington.

Thursday's race on the 3rd pays $2000 to win and a minimum of $200 just to start the A main while Friday's race on the 4th will up the anti to $3000 to win and a minimum of $275 just to start the A-main. The Texas Winter Nats finale on Saturday will pay $5000 to the winner with a minimum starting pay of $300. For more info, visit www.USMTS.com

Last year, 95 different Modifieds and 76 different Limited Modifieds competed over the weekend. Limited Modifieds will race for a combined winner's share total of $2700 with NO entry fees! They will race for $500 to win on Thursday, $700 to win on Friday and a nice $1500 to win at the finale.

Wednesday, Dec 2nd practice night for both classes.

Time to get serious about the weather now. Looks like we're going to fit between systems perfectly.

Baytown forecast at weather.com:

Wed Dec 2 Cloudy 55° 38° 20%

Thu Dec 3 Partly Cloudy 58° 39° 20%

Fri Dec 4 Sunny 60° 42° 0%

Sat Dec 5 Partly Cloudy 62° 50° 20%

Sun Dec 6 Few Showers 67° 51° 30%

Mon Dec 7 Showers 66° 48° 60%

Raining now (Monday), rain again tomorrow, cloudy and cool on Wednesday which makes me wonder if we'll get practice in or not but I can live without practice (although, I'd like to see the racers get it in) as long we get those race day forecasts to come true! We are not scheduled on Sunday or Monday obviously. Just put those to show the trend.

The great thing about these USMTS shows, is even with 150 cars running in 2 classes (it's just 2 classes!), they get them in under 4 hours! No sitting around and waiting for anything. No intermissions even. Just race, race, race and don't miss your heat race or B main line-up or....see you next time! They don't wait...

Saturday's show will be the best temperature-wise....like it ought to be in December, right?!

OK. As you know, the tickets are free for Friday and Saturday's grandstand entry (get them at O'Reilly Auto Parts!) but it is not an entirely free event. It cost $10 to park per night per car load on Friday and Saturday. Since it cost to get in the grandstand on Thursday (the coldest night), parking is free for Thursday. So, 2 people in a car can still a great race for just $10 where it would normally cost you $30. 4 or 5 people in a car and you have a real bargain!

Call HRP about heaters in the grandstand ahead of time. I don't think they are allowed. Won't need them Friday and Saturday. The crowds on those nights and this fast moving, quick paced racing show will keep things much warmer for everyone anyway. No long delays, no intermissions or the like at these USMTS shows!
