TRP
Texana Raceway Park Results August 15, 2009 Brown Scores Exciting Modified Win in Pursuit of the South Texas Championship Modified Series August 15th ushered in the second hosting of the Kids Go-Karts races. The highly anticipated competition was held at intermission. Several quick thinking sponsors jumped in at the start of the night and built a pot of money so that all competitors would have something to walk away with. Contributors to the pot consisted of Chapman Motorsports comprised of Barry Moody, Jim Chapman and Paul White. Also contributing were Sonny Johs, and track owner Bruce Tesch. In the end, the competitors placing 2nd on back received a $20 bill, and the competition winner, Cody Leonard took home $40. Nice event for the kids and fun for everyone. With the Mini-Stocks off for the evening, the Texana Classic Dwarf Cars were the first up for their features. As the track conditions changed dramatically from the heats where the track was fairly heavy, it quickly went to the more challenging dry slick for the feature. Several drivers had some adjustments as the feature progressed. Andrew Cline lead a large part of the feature, but former track champion Greg Sexton scored the win in the end. Pole sitter Chris Shafer carried the field to green with Nic Priem on his outside and Monty Chamberlain on the inside of Row 2. As Shafer headed into Turn 1, the dry slick conditions snuck up as Shafer tilted sideways coming to a pause between 1 & 2. Chamberlain threw his car sideways to avoid T-boning Shafer and the two came to rest side by side. The race stayed green as Shafer and Chamberlain chose to keep running and chase the tail of the field as opposed to causing a caution. Shafer exited with a flat after a lap. Shawn Kline suffered an early failure also and headed to the infield. Coming from the tail of the field, Chamberlain worked up to 3rd spot and was placing pressure on Janet Perks. Perks held strong, and in the last few laps, Chamberlain suffered a right rear flat and exited the track. All the while, Nic Priem was distancing himself from the entire field and demonstrated he had definitely adjusted to the changed track surface. Priem cruised to a smooth victory with Janet Perks in 2nd and Randy Kacir in 3rd. But, veteran Bob Ort who is very versed with the dry slick had other plans and demonstrated that “you can’t count the chickens before they hatch”. Ort worked his way thru the field consistently throughout the feature and set his sights on Leita. Ort went to the high side where non one else was trying and made it stick for several laps, carrying good speed coming out of the turns. Once ahead of Leita, Leita regrouped and caught back up to Ort’s rear quarter, but coming in too hot in 1&2, Leita got loose and it shuffled him back several spaces. From that point, Ort cruised on to the win with Greg Turner running out of laps to close in on Ort and finishing a very respectable 2nd. White who is the current point’s leader for the class was followed up by Last Minute Racing’s Mickey Helms who is 2nd in the points chase. Based on the results, superstition would lead one to believe that it paid to be carrying a three digit car number. A consistent runner this would be Mike Davenport’s first feature win at Texana Raceway Park. Davenport who pulls from Rosharon for every single Texana event is as nice as they get. Davenport took his blue #70 ride and negotiated each turn with perfection. Davenport was able to hold off current point’s leader G W Hessong and gave the fans a pleasing driving demonstration. Survivors 70 Mike Davenport 47 G W Hessong 36 Lucky Gilbert As the Modifieds rolled out, they would run for track points as well as points in the South Texas Championship Modified Series. This was the third and final event in the series for Texana Raceway Park to host in 2009. The show would pretty much consist of Paul White and Danny Brown. White went to the early lead and was able to protect the low line. Brown followed White for many laps on the low line. However, Brown decided to move up to the very top using what has become a patented line by shop mate Steve Whitaker Jr. Brown carried his ride in fast and high in the turns using all the way to the cushion on turn 1&2 and quickly started reeling in White. Brown moved past White on the outside, cleared White and then moved to protect the low line. As the race stayed under green for many laps, the duo caught the lapped traffic and some anxious moments came about as a trio of lap cars was encountered. With patience and perseverance that seemed to take several laps, both Brown and White worked past the lap traffic and Brown would hold off White to take the win and add to his lead in the championship series.
