Yale Claims Texas Super Racing Series Opener

March 28, 2004

By: Pat Mayberry

A near capacity crowd at Corpus Christi Motor Speedway witnessed an exciting finish as pole-sitter and race winner, Mike Yale, held off a hard charging Jamie Fuller to claim the season opener in the Texas Super Racing Series. The Texas two veteran drivers put a great driving exhibition for the fans the final ten laps before Fuller was forced to settle for second place.

During qualifying, Yale posted a solid time of 14.903 seconds, placing him eighth behind fast qualifier, Ryan Englehardt, who set a blistering qualifying time of 14.602 seconds. Englehardt picked up the five bonus points for his fast qualifier effort. "The track was pretty good," said Englehardt. "We didn't compensate for the weather cooling off and the car got a little tight. We'll probably free it up a little bit, but keep it set up for a lot of little short runs tonight."

Yale, who had already won the "Best Appearing Car Award," as voted by the Corpus Christi race fans, practiced well all day, but struggled during qualifying. Needing some luck, Yale got it when a lucky fan selected from the crowd gets to toss two large dice from the flag-stand in the trademark series field inversion. Yale needed an eight and when the second toss landed on five to go with the three from the first roll, suddenly the Houston, TX. driver found himself on the pole. "We definitely got some luck with the dice roll tonight. It couldn't have been any better," said a jubilant Yale, as he existed his rocket in victory lane. "We needed an eight and we got an eight. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good."

That was all the luck Yale needed and as the green flag dropped, Yale got a great jump and drove hard into turn one opening up a three-car lead over outside pole-sitter, Brad Hudak. Yale was strong on short runs all night and was helped by five cautions over the course of the evening. However, it looked like Yale's luck almost ran out on lap 35, when a spin in turn one forced him to go to the high side to avoid being collected in the mess. The sudden move to the top of the track resulted in his number 50 Chevy Monte Carlo scrapping to wall. "It knocked the toe in and bent the right front wheel," said Yale. "That made it worse the last twenty or so laps. It was real darty and getting harder and harder to drive." Yale had to continue to move his line up and as he moved his line, Fuller crept closer and closer.

Close racing has been a trademark of the Texas Super Racing Series and they did not disappoint the crowd with the finish to their first visit to the Emerald City. The enthusiastic fans were on their feet cheering for Yale and Fuller as they took the white flag for one to go. Fuller looked high, then looked low, but never could find the opening needed to get past Yale. A single car length was all that separated the two warriors as they took the checked flag to the approval of the thrilled fans. "This race was a lot of fun. If I could have just got around one more car it would have been awesome," stated runner-up Fuller. "My car was pushing all day long. We changed a spring right before we started the race and the push went away and

the car came alive."

Following Yale and Fuller to the line was Tommy Gural, Beau Bukowski, Damon Bean, Robert Elizondo, Chris Schild, Brad Hudak, Pat Lyon, and Lloyd Alexander rounded out the top ten. Mike Yale and Damon Bean won tires from Bartell Motorsports for their first and fifth place finishes. Chris Schild takes home the Hard Charger of the Night Award for improving his starting spot of fifteenth all the way to seventh.

I received this from Pat Mayberry:

Dear Media Friends,

I apologize for a mistake made in the top ten for this story. I

accidentally picked up the unofficial results when I was writting this piece

and there were a couple of changes made in scoring before the race became

official. Please remove the old story if possible and replace it with this

corrected version.

Thank you and I again apologoze for the mistake.
