ROMCO "Texas Tornado Tour" Thunders into Thunder Hill for Delayed Season Opener

Kyle -- Drivers who haven't raced since November had to wait another two weeks when the scheduled season opener in San Antonio was postponed due to rain, so the most powerful touring series cars in Texas will kick off a 14-round season at Thunder Hill Raceway here on Saturday, March 27, as the ROMCO "Texas Tornado Tour" for super late model stock cars hits the newly-reconfigured 3/8-mile banked track. The ROMCO drivers have worked their way up the ladder at short tracks (often referred to as “bullrings”), and include defending champion Brandon Bendele of San Antonio and 2003 rookie of the year Bradley Riethmeyer of Hutto.

This will be the first event on the newly reconfigured D-shaped oval, which now boasts back straight that is 20 feet wider along with new concrete aprons on the inner edges of the track. All of the changes, including rebuilding the turn four wall to give drivers more runoff area, are intended to promote closer racing. Other improvements include a paved access road and additional grandstand seating in turn one.

Super late models are state-of-the-art machines with the same power-to–weight ratio as their NASCAR Nextel Cup counterparts. On shorter tracks like Thunder Hill, the lighter "super lates" have a slight advantage, especially in the corners.

Thunder Hill Raceway is on IH 35 at Exit 210 (Yarrington Road) just north of San Marcos. Gates open Saturday at 5:30 pm, with the action getting underway at 7:30. Adult ticket prices are $18, kids under 12 get in for eight dollars, and those under six are free.
