2nd Annual Fourth of July Sprint Car Classic, ASCS Gulf South Region @ Texana Raceway Park, 7/3-4/09

By J M Hallas

Edna, Tx.,(July 4th, 2009) Texana Raceway Park had it's own fireworks as the Lucas Oil, ASCS Gulf South Series capped off the Independence Day weekend festivities with the second night of racing on the 5/16 mile, semi-baked, paper-clip shaped, clay oval. The top four finishers from Friday night, George White, Scottie McDonald, Tommy Bryant and Kent Lewis jr. have already been locked in to tonights $2,000 to win A-main.

Several crashes, flips and roll overs on Friday night left some teams scrambling to make repairs for the Saturday night show. Among them two-time defending series winner, and points contender, Brandon Berryman who made hard contact with the wall after tangling with Terry Monroe, who tipped over. Other's included Bubba McDonald who did a series of end over end flips through the infield and Bean Elliott, who turned over during Friday nights A-main.

Saturday nights action also included the Modifieds and Limited Modifieds paying both $1,000 to win, and the Bomber class running for an increased purse, and $500 to win, thanks to numerous sponsors adding money to the pot of all three classes.

Bryant survives battle, to win war

Tommy Bryant had to battle his way to the front of the ASCS Gulf South Region main and battle with last nights winner George White, and lapped traffic. During a late race battle with both, Bryant and White made contact sending White into the turn 4 wall. After the red, Bryant held off points leader Aaron Reutzel the final two laps for the win.

The 25-lap ASCS Gulf South Sprint Cars had a hard time getting the show on the road, figuratively speaking. The first try saw Jimmy Brooks back into the turn 3 wall before completing a lap. The second try wasn't any better after White had trouble getting going on green, stacking up the field, with Bubba McDonald tipping over after contact in the pack. Even the third time wasn't a charm either as Scottie McDonald spun and collected Travis Knighton.

Is there a full moon tonight?

Finally under green, Glen Martin led into tun 1 from the pole, but Kent Lewis jr. got a god run going by White and Martin for the lead. White took second from Martin on lap 1 when Blake Roberts and Greg Rilat had separate spins and collected Klint Angelette with neither having major damage. Once back to green, Reutzel, Bryant and Martin went three wide for third with Reutzel getting the spot until Bryant sailed by on lap 3, and Eric Baldacinni moved up to fifth.

S. McDonald brought the yellow again on lap 4 when he looped it in turn 2. On the restart, White tried high on Lewis, but in the pack Brandon Berryman spun sending Roberts high and up on the wall in turn 2. Robert stayed on all fours and kept on trucking. Once back to green flag racing Lewis got a good jump, with Bryant pressuring White for second.

White held off Bryant and began trying the top of Lewis for the lead. White snagged the top spot on lap 8 followed by Bryant to second. Reutzel then put the heat on Lewis with the two making slight contact on lap 9. Up front the battle was heating up as Bryant tried a slide job on White that came up short in turn 1. The top three of White, Bryant and Reutzel were nose to tail as they came up on traffic.

White tried to dive under the slower cars, with Bryant using the top side to get the lead at halfway. White, Reutzel, Lewis and Baldacinni still held the remaining top five spots. Lewis used slower cars to get along side Reutzel for third on lap 14 as Ray Allen Kulhanek got a top five position. Bryant was increasing his lead on White by lap 15, with Kulhanek getting inside Lewis for fourth.

Bryant had built a half straightaway margin on White, but had two cars side by side in his way. White closed the gap on Bryant who couldn't find room to get by. Reutzel then caught White as the lead trio still had traffic to contend with. That all broke lose on lap 23.

Bryant tried to dive under the almost lapped cars in turn 3, with White getting a run up top. Bryant hit a slick spot or the infield berm sliding up in front of White who jumped his right rear. White went nearly head-on into the wall, then airborne and did a couple helicopter twists in the air before landing upright. Fortunately White was uninjured, but the car is junk.

When green waved again for the green, white, checkered finish Reutzel took his one and only shot at Bryant diving into turn 1 on the bottom. The best he could manage was getting along side before Bryant powered ahead. As the white waved Bryant had several car lengths on Reutzel and held him off for the victory in the Hometech Construction, Alco Automotive, G&G Custom Custom Golf Carts, Custom Vinyl Designs, 105 Machine Shop, J&J Chassis.

The track was great and I had good equipment,” commented Bryant. “Dave and Beverly Miller give me great equipment and we just hit the set up tonight. We were fast. It was fast on the top and everyone else was running the bottom. So you go where they're not. Last night we were good on top before George(White) got us the bottom. We don't run bleeders and the tires built up too much.”

“It was tough luck for him tonight. I hate to see that happen. I'd rather race them, than crash them. I slid up in front of him and he jumped my right rear. I didn't even see or know he was there. It's more my fault than his. We don't have a move over rule for slower cars and those guys were just racing. You just have to try to find a way around them.”

“Starting back where we were you just have to go. Try to find a hole and race hard. I was fortunate and moved up quick after those restarts.”

“Our set up was close to last night. We put a little more stagger in it and changed some shocks around. For the most part it was pretty similar with some new tires.”

“It's all racing I guess,” lamented White. “Lapped cars played into my fortune for me to catch up, but they also were a part of causing the wreck. So I can't point the finger at anyone. It was just hard racing. I got to the outside of Tommy(Bryant), jumped a wheel, stuck it in the fence, that's all there is to it.”

“Hits like that will end your career pretty quick. Everything on the car is junk. If the motor is alright when I take it out and check it, I'll be tickled to death.”

“That's Sprint Car racing. One minute you've got a win, the next minute you've got a pile of junk”

White whips up on both Modified fields again

As has been the case many times this season, Temple's Paul White pulled off another nightly double feature win, taking the Modified and Limited Modified checkers.

After building a big lead in the Modified feature, a late race caution erased the margin. White was able to fend off defending track champ Nick Hardcastle over the final two laps for the win.

The Limited Modified feature was a bit easier as White ran off to a big advantage in the caution-free event. While the rest of the field fought it out for the runner-up spot, White cruised on to take the checkers by a huge margin.

As green waved to start the 20-lap Modified feature, White easily beat Hardcastle into turn 1 for the lead. Hardcastle had Greg Dinsmore, who shed most of the rear body panels, along side for second. As White inched away, Hardcastle secured second with Dinsmore now challenged by his old car, driven by Darin Leonard. Leonard was able to take the spot from Dinsmore's ill handling car on lap 2.

Vince Kacir then moved in on and around Dinsmore for fourth on lap 5. Jason Lewis brought out the yellow with a solo spin in turn 2 erasing White's big lead. Once back to green, White quickly motored out to eight car lengths over Hardcastle, while Leonard, Kacir and Dinsmore ran nose to tail for third.

Kacir got under Leonard for third on lap 8 as the duo ran wheel to wheel coming to halfway. At the crossed flags it was White by a large margin over Hardcastle, Leonard, Kacir and Dinsmore. Dinsmore briefly retook fourth from Kacir, before pulling off. With five to go White had a full straight lead on Hardcastle and looked to run away with the win.

Jeremy Davenport disrupted that plan when he spun on lap 17 to bring out a yellow and re-bunch the field. As green flew White wasted little time pulling away from Hardcastle. As White rebuilt his margin, Kacir again tried Leonard for third but was unable to get by. As the checkers waved it was White in the Bridwell Motorsports, Engines by Adan & Jeff, Dust Devil Chassis scoring another Texana win.

At the start of the 20-lap Limited Modified feature White beat outside polesitter Mickey Helms into turn 1 for the lead. Vince Louden, Barry Moody and Johnny Torres side by side with Victor Lindsey followed. Aaron Hudgeons, making his return after cancer treatment, got by Torres then Lindsey for fifth in a car he borrowed from Shane Hoefling.

Hudgeons continued his charge getting past Moody on lap 6 for fourth. White ran up on a pack of cars at the tail of the field as the they came to halfway with Helms, Louden, Hudgeons and Moody rounding out the top five. Lapped traffic allowed Helms to close on White, but Helms half spun in turn 1, took a tour of the infield and lost spots to Louden and Hudgeons.

On lap 12 Louden, Hudgeons and Helms were now nose to tail dicing through traffic, as White, now clear of traffic, sailed away. White built his lead to a full straightaway with five to go, leaving Louden and Hudgeons side by side for second. Hudgeons got the spot finally with two to go, but White was long gone. White easily cruised to the victory in the Bridwell Motorsports, Engines by Adan & Jeff, Dust Devil Chassis.

Perks puts one on the boys in Bomber bash

“You just got beat by a girl” was the theme for the Bomber feature as Janet Perks showed the guys how to get around the track. Garrett Hayes, a graduate from Mini Stocks, beat Perks into turn 1 as green waved on the 20-lap Bomber feature. Monty Chamberlain fell in line third, with Brian King getting past Shawn Cline for fourth.

As the top three began to ease ahead, Chris Shafer was working his way up after starting near the rear of the field. Shafer got a top five spot on lap 5 as he got around Cline. The lead trio caught the back of the field on lap 7, and Perks began to pressure Hayes for the lead. Perks and Hayes were door to door for the lead on lap 11, with a slower car in their path. Perks was able to use the traffic as a pick and take the lead on lap 12, while Hayes wadded up the front end on the lapped car.

Behind the lead group, Shafer closed in on King in the battle for fourth. Despite front end damage, Hayes stayed on Perks for the lead. Slower cars again played a part in the final laps as Hayes gave Perks a tap on lap 18. Chamberlain took advantage of the fight sneaking by Hayes on the final lap for second. At the checkers it was Perks in the Plum Crazy Trucking, Chevy Nova scoring the popular win.
