“The Thrill” Tames “The Taz” in O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series Action

Tazewell, TN-May 23, 2009- The O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series presented by Graphic Impressions ventured to the Volunteer State of Tennessee on Saturday evening and when all was said and done, Vic Hill of Knoxville, TN had conquered the high-banks of the “The Taz”, Tazewell Speedway in Tazewell, TN, picking up a $4,000 payday in the 50 lap main event.

Hill’s victory was his first career series win and made him the 55th different winner in series history. Hill’s winning effort came behind the wheel Landair Transport Inc./Pilot Travel Centers/Miller Brothers Coal Inc./American Racing Tire South/VP Racing Fuel/Dan Estes Construction/Ohlins/Peterson Fluid Systems/Comp Cams/Edelbrock/CP Pistons/Gary Williams Fuel Systems/Lunati Cranks/CV Racing Products/Joe Gibbs Driven Performance Synthetic Racing Oil/Jesel/Manley/Simpson/Vic Hill Racing Engines/Fastlane Signs & Graphics/Real Wheels sponsored GRT Race Cars, Vic Hill Race Engines powered unit.

Fellow Knoxville, TN native Rick Rogers would claim runner-up honors in the 50 lap affair, while Sevierville, TN native Chad Ogle would earn third place honors at the finish. Tommy Kerr of Rockhold, TN would finish in the fourth position, with Billy Ogle, Jr. of Knoxville, TN completed the top five at the drop of the checkered flag.

The remainder of the top ten at the finish at Tazewell Speedway were Bryan Hendrix,PPM Racing Products Hard Charger Award winner Michael Chilton (started 23rd), 24th starting Tim Tungate, Dustin Linville, and David Webb. The 50-lap, $4,000 to win event would be slowed by seven caution periods.

The start would see outside polesitter Victor Lee stall his car have mechanical issues and be pulled pitside, not to return. The second attempted start would also be called back when Brad Hall would spin his mount. Finally under green, Rick Rogers would grab the top position, with Vic Hill, Chad Ogle, Tommy Kerr, and Shon Flanary in tow. Caution wave again on lap 4 when former track champion Jason Trammell would spin his machine. The restart would see Rogers continue to hold the race lead, with Hill dogging him from his runner-up slot. Billy Ogle, Jr. would make his way into the top five with a pass of Flanary for fifth on lap 6, with Flanary triggering the caution flag one round later when he spun. Back underway, Rogers and Hill continued setting a torrid pace at the front, with Ogle, Kerr, and Ogle, Jr. continuing to battle for third through fifth.

The front five would remain the same until lap 15 when veteran Danny Yoder would spin his unit to slow the action. The restart would still have Rogers out front and Hill in the runner-up spot as the front pair would pull away a bit from the field and would begin to work slower traffic on lap 22. As the field received the halfway signal, the caution would wave one circuit later on lap 26 for debris on the racing surface.

When action resumed again, Rogers and Hill continued to ride first and second, with Chad Ogle and Kerr still third and fourth, while Billy Ogle, Jr. would begin to feel some pressure from Jeff Neubert. The battle for fifth would go on for several laps as Rogers and Hill continued to rapidly click off laps up front. Neubert would win the battle for fifth eventually, getting by Ogle, Jr. on lap 36. The final caution of the event waved on lap 40 when Michael Smith rolled to a stop on the racing surface.

The final restart would see business pick up as Ogle, Jr. would pick his way back around Neubert for the fifth position, while Hill turned up the heat on Rogers for the race lead. Lap 45 would be the paydirt lap for Hill as he would drive past Rogers and take the race lead. The top five would remain the same over the final five circuits as Hill would score his first ever series victory, followed by Rogers, Chad Ogle, Tommy Kerr, and Billy Ogle, Jr.

In preliminary action, Rick Rogers was the Racing Optics Top Qualifier among 27 entries by eclipsing the long-standing Tazewell Speedway track record with a lap of 11.047 seconds. Heat race checkered flags went to Rogers in Wayne Bowen Racing Supply heat one, Hill in Graphic Impressions heat two, and Lee in C.J. Rayburn Race Cars heat three. The B-Main would be scored by Chris Combs, with series provisional starting spots taken by Michael Chilton and Tim Tungate.

The next event for the O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series Super Late Models takes place on Friday May 29 at the Richmond Raceway in Richmond, KY in a 40 lap/$3,000 to win event. This event has been postponed twice already due to inclement weather.
