Harry A. Elbel, a local race-car driver from the 1940s, died Thursday of natural causes.

Elbel, 85, of Kendalia, grew up in a family of auto mechanics and racers. He started his own mechanic shop in San Antonio, Elbel Garage, at 15.

Elbel began racing about three times a week and won numerous trophies across South Texas, daughter Ginger Elbel said.

He also participated in Mexican Road Races that made stops in several major cities, including Mexico City, Oaxaca, Chihuahua, León and Ciudad Juárez.

In 1953, shortly after he stopped racing, Elbel opened Elbel Radiator shop in San Antonio.

He worked there until his retirement in 1987.

In addition to daughter Ginger, survivors include his wife, Ann Elbel; and children Nancy Simmons, Harry Elbel Jr., Gene Elbel and Maryann Griffin.

A service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Sunset Funeral Home.
