TRP
For Immediate Release Texana Raceway Park Results from 9/27/08 Howard Willis Lays the Line for Modified Field Heading into the weekend, there were still five of the seven class champions that would come down to being determined on the last night of competition. The Super Stock division having completed their last night of points competition was previously determined and won by G W Hessong. In Modifieds, Nick Hardcastle had it mathematically secured before the night started, but he decided to show the fans just how he secured the championship by running up in the front for a strong finish on the night. With double points available for heats and features, the drama would unfold for the five classes with championships up for grabs. Counting down to the USMTS show in November, Texana Raceway Park welcomed in some visitors who tested the track for the big event in November. Among those visitors was southeast Texas’ Howard Willis. Willis who can take just about any type of car to the front on dirt proved just how to get it done with his first visit to Texana. Trying to move the program along, so as to leave time for the much anticipated mechanics races, powder puff races, and Parents in the Mini-Stocks challenge, heats were run quickly. After a very brief intermission, it was time for the feature events. Mini Stocks With a measurable lead in the points, but not mathematically secured, Jason Bloom needed to start the feature to secure the championship. Visiting from the Valley area of Texas, it was the #21 of Solis who took the early lead. The young Solis fit right into the Texana teen program as he was a teenager with a great attitude and good sportsmanship. As Solis pulled away, Jacob Burnett and Jason Bloom were running side by side for 2nd for several laps until Burnett experienced a flat tire. With Solis pulling away from the field, Bloom was comfortably in 2nd while Zach Tesch and Lauren Chamberlain were running in 3rd and 4th respectively putting down solid laps. Garrett Hayes who had started in the rear was patiently picking his way thru traffic, and moving into the top five, then passing Chamberlain. At this point the top four points runners were in the 2nd – 5th positions. A late race caution for Haley Jansky in her new ride set up a two lap shoot out. When the green flew again, Solis retained his lead and Bloom moved back into 2nd. Using experience gained throughout the season, Chamberlain kept in close on the restart and hammered down to pass Hayes. Then she set her sights on Tesch. She moved up close to Tesch’s bumper on the final lap, carrying solid speed into turn three. Chamberlain dove low in turn 3 moving to the inside of Tesch. She stayed on the gas, held the line and pulled in front of Tesch coming out of turn 4, and won the drag race to the checkers finishing in 3rd. When the checkers flew, it was Solis, Bloom, Chamberlain, Tesch and Hayes. Congratulations to Solis on the win and Bloom in securing the championship. We’ve said it before, but we are very proud of all our young racers. Dirt track racing can be proud to call this great group of teenagers, “racers of tomorrow”. 21 – Solis 49 Jason Bloom (class champion) 55 Lauren Chamberlain 72 Zach Tesch 9 Garrett Hayes 63 Chase Sanchez 6 Alexis Louden 22 Patricia Lucas 00 Haley Jansky 04 Jacob Burnett Texana Classic Dwarfs The Texana Classic Dwarfs had the closest points battle coming into the night. An event filled with several cautions, at the first caution, Andrew cline Jr. was in the lead with Gary Faris in 2nd. On the restart, Cline retained the lead. After another caution, Cline again kept the lead. Joseph Snow and Victor Vargas battled for third with Snow moving up. EZ Casey and Brandon Dorsey tangled in Turn 2 on the outside where it was slick. Dorsey got the worst end of the deal as he had to be towed off. On this restart Faris and Gary Hanson were side by side. Vargas moved to 2nd and then another caution. Greg Sexton Jr. spun in 1 & 2 and had to exit the track. With Cline back to the lead, Snow moved up to 2nd with Vargas and Hanson battling for 3rd with the race down to two laps. When the checkers flew it was Cline across the line first with Snow in 2nd and Hanson in 3rd. Greg Sexton Sr., finished 4th, and secured the championship. 19 Andrew Cline Jr 01 Joseph Snow (?) 54 Gary Hanson 1 Greg Sexton Sr (Class Champion) 24 Victor Vargas 2 Grant Hanson 15 Gary Faris 79 Doug Schmidt 07 Michael Dion 36 ? 44 ? 12 Josh Hunt 1jr Greg Sexton Jr. 82 Brandon Dorsey 2ez Easy Casey 00 Stan Jolliffe Bombers In another class where the class champion would be determined on the last night, Danny Bennett was the candidate with the best odds, having a good lead in points when the night started. Bennett had set his sights on a points championship at the start of the season and did the right things all year long to deliver on that goal. Experiencing the sophomore jinx throughout the season, 2007 class champion Charlie Mills experienced a blown motor just after the green flew starting the race. Underway, it was Bennett to the early lead with Chris Shafer in 2nd and 2006 class champion Monty Chamberlain in 3rd. Bennett and Shafer performed some excellent side by side racing with Bennett on the inside and Shafer on the outside. Chamberlain riding in 3rd for several laps stayed behind the two watching the show until he decided he wanted to get in the act also. Once Shafer took the lead, Chamberlain took the opportunity to pass Bennett on the outside after a caution and then set his sights on Shafer. Getting a good run coming out of turn 2, Chamberlain pulled beside Shafer and the two drag raced down the back straight heading for turn 3. Chamberlain got the point going into turn 3 and took the lead. Shortly after, a red light situation occurred for Aaron Ivory who hit the front straight wall. Ivory exited the car under his own power and took a ride in the ambulance for precautionary reasons. On the restart Shafer and Garrett Hayes tangled with Shafer eventually exiting with a blown clutch. Moving up to challenge was Brian King and David McBride with Danny Bennett staying in the top 4 also. When the checkers flew it was Chamberlain with the win. 55 Monty Chamberlain 31 Brian King R4J Danny Bennett (Class Champion) 26 David McBride 01 Lane Tipton 97 ? 5 Jackie Burnett 77 Chris Shafer 04 Aaron Ivory 101 Rickey Koopman 76 Gary “Pork Chop” Wright 33 Charlie Mills 5x Garrett Hayes Hot Stock Trucks After bad luck in the Bomber class, Chris Shafer doing double duty driving in Hot Stock Trucks would make up for the blown clutch in the Bomber car. Bob Ort came into the night with the points lead, but was not mathematically secure. Shafer headed to the early lead and gave the class a little demonstration how you get a truck around the track, lap after lap as he stretched out his lead. Late in the race Ort experienced mechanical problems and left the track. Justin Bloom who was 2nd in points closed in on the points chase, but Ort was too far ahead. Shafer took the #38 ride through lap after lap and took the win for the second straight event. 38 Chris Shafer 84 Justin Bloom 9 Jimmy Rogers 15 Gordon Boehm 18 Cody Loos 3 Gregory Turner 76 Justin “Peanut” Airhart 79 Stephen Wusterhausen 43 Bob Ort (Class Champion) 74 Darryl Davis (?) 39 Nathan Kildair Limited Mods “Mr. Consistent” Aaron Hudgeons had a sizable points lead starting the night. A large field of cars started the feature with some sidelined before the feature started. Throughout the field, there were several notable performances. Especially notable was JJ Jennings and Jensen Prey who both did some fantastic driving against a field of notable names. Talented Paul White took the early lead with Hudgeons in tow. Jennings was in 3rd and Lawrence Mikulencak in 4th. On the move, Prey was moving up through the field. White threaded the needle when he caught the lapped traffic and both Hudgeons and Jennings followed suit. White carried it to the finish and won, with Hudgeons in 2nd and Jennings in 3rd. 216 Paul White 10 Aaron Hudgeons (Class Champion) 26g J J Jennings 57 Jensen Prey 87 Lawrence Mikulencak 6 Vince Louden 82 Josh Majek 12 Roly Rodriguez 107 Kevin Parker 21 Victor Lindsey 42 Matthew Konvicka (?) 888 Aaron “Q Tip” Lunsford 12w Ricky Konvicka 12 Adam “Plum Crazy” Perks 3 Phillip Cantu 175 Brian McDevitt 75 Clint Brown 25 Brian Brooks 17 Greg Brooks 63 Shane Hoefling Modifieds While all of the nights features were great, it was time for the “main event” when 22 ground thumping modifieds took to the track. A quick glance at the names in the field, such as Miller, Willis, White, Mikulencak, and many others, it is easy to see that there was no shortage of talent. If one had come to watch nothing but the modified feature, they would have gotten their moneys worth with this event alone. Two huge names in dirt track racing were on the front row. Howard Willis with numerous credits to his resume was on the pole and the driver who has competed in and won just about every type of 4 wheeled racing, Paul White, was on the outside of Row 1. When the green flag dropped, it was Willis to the early lead and White in 2nd. Behind the duo was Nick Hardcastle, Elias Anderson and Aaron Hudgeons. There was excellent racing throughout the field, but two things really stood out. First, the absolute show was the Willis and White battle. White looked to the inside and outside several times, but there was just no phasing Willis and he demonstrated why he is so well known in dirt track competition. It was amazing how two top professionals can race so close for so many laps and never touch each other. Secondly, Danny Brown, would definitely have to be awarded the hard charger award. Brown moved up through the field and eventually into third place. If the event would have had more laps, it appeared as Brown had something for the front two and would have been able to make his presence more known. Again, a feature with many of the best, Willis would secure the win with White in 2nd. 1w Howard Willis 2w Paul White 55 “Downtown” Danny Brown 94 Nick Hardcastle (Class Champion) 31 Elias Anderson 10 Aaron Hudgeons 8 Steve Miller 57 Dale Flanagan 76 Jesse Manning 50 Solis (?) 22 Art Rodriguez 37 Brian Spindelman 155 Vince Kacir 29 Mickey Helms 52 A J Dancer 85 Jeff Nix 58 Rowdy Flanagan 39 Jed Rollins 96 Foster Ellison 12 Roly Rodriguez 87 Lawrence Mikulencak 56 Adan Arambula With the performances seen, The three day USMTS event November 20th – 22nd, is something no one will want to miss. Texana Raceway Park would like to thank all of the teams, fans, sponsors, and staff for a successful 2008 points season. We look forward to hosting the USMTS event in November and hope to see a huge number of competitors as we roll out the red carpet for the event.
