FASCAR Contingency Fund Letter

The following letter was sent from FASCAR to the San Antonio Speedway drivers last week:

December 17, 2003

SAN ANTONIO SPEEDWAY DRIVERS:

Starting with the 2004 racing season, FASCAR (Fans Associated with Stock Car Auto Racing) will be making some changes to create a new contingency plan for the drivers at San Antonio Speedway.

As you may know, FASCAR’s objective has always been to provide a unified organization of race fans and race teams dedicated toward improved community awareness and interest in stock car racing. In previous years, FASCAR has sponsored car shows to help promote racing, along with raising money for the San Antonio Speedway Drivers’ Point Fund and sponsoring tire giveaways to benefit the drivers. In addition, we implemented a Member Bonus Award program during the 2003 racing season to reward drivers for becoming FASCAR members. This program will continue in 2004.

One of our goals for next year’s racing season is to administer and maintain a contingency fund, in addition to coordinating any other fund-raising activities. We know all of you must be very frustrated with the past inconsistencies associated with the 50/50 fund, and FASCAR is committed to ensuring future funds are secure and end up in the hands of their rightful owners – our drivers! We have recently revised our by-laws to strengthen the tracking and accountability of our financial records. You may view our by-laws at the following website: http://www.fascar-sa.org/.

We plan to structure FASCAR’s contribution towards the Drivers’ Point Fund as a “contingency fund.” We came up with a unique idea in our November meeting to raise money without violating any gambling laws. Monies raised will be divided among the drivers who are FASCAR members as of May 1, 2004, along with active participation in FASCAR functions (attend at least three FASCAR meetings and one car show per year). To make it easier for our drivers to participate in the car shows, we will try to avoid scheduling these shows on race days. We ask that you understand our need to build the partnership between drivers and fans, as well as our goal to improve community awareness.

We hope we can count on you to become a FASCAR member. We will be collecting our annual dues during January and February of next year. The annual dues for adult membership are $20, and a family membership is $30. A membership application is attached. If you have any questions about the membership application, please contact Debbie Williams (Secretary/Treasurer). Her e-mail address is debwill@swbell.net, and her home phone number is 210-648-7373. Our meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at Shoney’s near I.H. 35 and Walzem at 7:30 p.m. We hope to see you there soon and encourage you to become an active part of our organization.

Sincerely,
