tqj3
Bubba Naumann qualified sixth, Eddy Wallace 13th. Naumann got some nose damage and overheated early in the race, so they parked it. txtom
Bandit's finishing result doesn't reflect at all how we ran out there. We lost a little time in the Thursday night practice, fixing a shifting problem. By the end of practice Thursday night, he was running 18.70's on the tires he won at San Antonio with. Keep in mind he had never seen the track until this day, and nothing in Texas compares in regards to dimensions and banking. Friday set up real good, and he timed 13th. A little more time with the set-up, and we think we could have been a 10th or so quicker real easy. Saturday night, he settled out in line with everyone else. A couple cautions here and there, and he wound up running 8th through a little over half the race. The car went a little tight in the center of the corner, but he was hanging with the lead pack. The 7 cars in front of him were all top shelf cars from that area. On a lap 72 or so restart, he got hung up behind a lapped car, and a couple guys got by him. The guy he was hung behind would go high one lap, low the next. It was a crap-shoot on what he was going to do. With about 10 or 12 laps to go, they were under a caution going down the front stretch, and somebody suddenly slowed about 6 cars in line. The guys behind stacked up, and Ronnie Sanders and the guy in front of him turned sideways right in front of Eddy. He tries to avoid it, but ended up against Sanders, breaking a front strut rod and a sway bar eye. We parked it at that point. It was a disappointing way to end the race, but he showed he could run with them. We can think of a couple things in the set-up we'll change the next time we go there. Guys that are fast in ROMCO can compete over there, and it's a shame mother nature put the Houston race against this one. Terry might be interested in knowing the announcer there gave a nice plug to the ROMCO series and the caliber of the racers that come from ROMCO to visit them over there. Speedracer, nice to see ya again, and keep us posted on how you're doing over there.
speedracer
it was great seeing you txtom. we had a blast down there. although we had some bad luck. we had a pretty good car at the beginning of the race until we burned a spark plug wire on about lap 15. good luck to you guys next year. hope to see yall down here more often next year speedracer
44SS
Eddy's car had some shifter problems when we got there, so that cut into our practice time quite a bit, but we got the car dialed in pretty close and were able to do a little more before qualifing. Needed a couple of more runs to get it where Eddy wanted it, but ran out of time. As you can see, the whole field was pretty close on times. Eddy ran a good race, he got tide up with a lap car that thought he should race the led lap cars, and went from about 7th to about 10th or 11th. He was able to gain a couple of spots back before a caution came out with about 12 to go, during the caution on the front strech, the 16 of Tim Fryer spun in turn 1 and Ronnie Sanders locked up his tires got sideways and turned right into Eddy on the right front. Eddy came back around and pitted, we pulled off the remainning right front fender and saw some broken suspension and knew we were done with only 9 or ten to go. Dont know what caused Fryer to spin, Sanders was unable to continue as well. But wow, what an awsome track! We already know what set up we are going to start with next time, we learned a lot and had fun, its just hard to swallow when we had such a good car. Next year, instead of wounder who we are, they will be timming Eddy during practice because he will be fast.
44SS
Tom, I started my post and then got interrupted by the rug rats. I didnt know if you were still going to be up this late or if you were still recoverig, so I thought I would try to give a txtom narative.
txtom
That's cool, always good to have another perspective. By the way, it was the #99 Little, not Fryar that got together with Sanders. And you're right, they will be watching next time we unload. Don't know how your trip back went, ours had kind of a comical start. We headed west on 90 to catch a short-cut to I-10. Instead of going down to our usual connection, I saw a road I knew went under 10, what I didn't know was there wasn't a connecting intersection. We crossed under 10 and started thinking "what now?" and backtracked to a road that said I-10 service road. We got on it, and got about 1/2 mile before it turned into red Alabama clay. We could see I-10, just couldn't get to it. We thought, incorrectly, that surely this stinking road will connect to the highway somewhere. About 3 or so miles, the road stopped in someone's front yard, complete with trailer house and a school bus on blocks. All this at 2 AM. By the time we backtracked back to I-10, we lost about a half hour, and I'm catching all kinds of crap from my Dad, will probably hear about this "Bubba" moment for awhile! We only made the MS/LA border before we decided we'd had enough. We didn't get moving Sunday until about 10:30, got home about 7:30. Needless to say, I didn't get a whole lot done today. I probably shouldn't tell this story on myself, Big John will take this ball and run after all I said about him whacking that deer on the way home from Pensacola last year! 44SS
txtom, If you were trying to read the map, I know why you got lost. Not enough light, right? Our ride home was just looong.
ups88john
youre right, although you didnt have to pay any money to LA, it did cost you a little gas money and some sleep lol. im sure the guys gave you a hard enough time, so ill lay off this for a day or two. glad to hear that all made it home safe, and that eddie had a good run. wish i could of been there, cause some body decided that they wanted my car a little more than i did on saturday, luckily an acura is a hard thing to steal. big john
