NickHolt
Got this from Bruce Sunday morning (2/23/03): ________________________________________________ AMALIE OIL TEXAS NATIONALS PRESENTED BY ANCIRA CARS, TRUCKS AND RVs By Bruce Mabrito The biggest motorsports event in the San Antonio area in 2003 is about to descend on San Antonio Raceway, formerly River City Raceway, east of San Antonio on IH-10. The International Hot Rod Association National series is starting its 2003 season at the three-year old San Antonio Raceway facility, which has recently increased its seating capacity and spruced up the already beautiful facility. The IHRA Amalie Oil Texas Nationals presented by Ancira Cars, Trucks and RVs will draw many thousands of spectators and many hundreds of competitors. The Amalie Oil Texas Nationals starts Friday, Feb. 28 and runs through Sunday, March 2, 2003. Anyone who has ever enjoyed the atmosphere of fast cars, high-performance engines, and the sights and sounds of a national motorsports event will thoroughly love this San Antonio Raceway/IHRA event. For those who have never seen such racing, prepare to have the ground literally shake under your feet and, even with ear plugs, you will feel your heart beat to the rhythm of gigantic engines blasting forth unstoppable horsepower. The real beauty of this environment is that you can watch, up close and personal, the teams working on their cars and engines. That simply cannot be done on such a scale in NASCAR Winston Cup and Indy Car racing. The drag racing stars will include 2001 and 2002 IHRA champion Clay Millican, along with Rhonda Hartman-Smith, John Smith, and Bruce Litton in over 300 mph Top Fuel dragsters. The popular Pro Modified class features the nitrous versus supercharged Pro Modified class, with Shannon Jenkins, Mitch and Quain Stott and Thomas Patterson of Houston. In the Funny Car class, five-time world champ Mark Thomas will battle Laurie Cannister and Terry McMillen along with a substantial Funny Car field. The IHRA Pro Stock cars are the 210 mph factory hot rods of John Montecalvo, Chevy Cavalier, Carl Baker, Mercury Cougar, Elijah Morton and Jeff Dobbins, both in Mustangs, and Rick Jones, in a Dodge Neon. Champions will also be crowned this weekend in seven sportsman classes, and it is expected that many South Texas and Southwest U.S. competitors will view for those awards. It is an open secret that area drag racers have been preparing for this clash at both local drag strips, San Antonio Raceway and Alamo Dragway, over the past two months. The schedule for the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals presented by Ancira starts on Friday, Feb. 28th, with the gates open at 8 a.m. and Sportsman qualifying at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Pro qualifying is at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. On Saturday at San Antonio Raceway, gates open at 8 a.m. and Sportsman qualifying starts then, with eliminations at 3:30 p.m. Pro Qualifying is at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. That includes the special show, "Night of Fire," that has Ken Nelson's wheel standing "Cool Bus," the "Queen of Diamonds" jet dragster, the 200 mph Jet Kenworth of Bob Motz, and a fireworks display. On Sunday, March 2nd, the gates open again at 8 a.m. with Sportsman eliminations at 8:30 a.m. and the Championship finals are at 11 a.m., with the "Blast Off" finals at 1 p.m. The IHRA has made an effort to keep their tickets affordable for such a big motorsports show. Friday adult general admission tickets are $20, with children 6-12, $5. On Saturday, adult general admission is $35, with children 6-12 at $5. On Sunday, adult general admission is set at $35, with children 6-12 still at $5. San Antonio Raceway is approximately 12 miles each of San Antonio on IH-10 toward Seguin. Take the Santa Clara Road Exit off IH-10 to access San Antonio Raceway. NickHolt
I just wish San Antonio Raceway had not chosen that name. It is way too easy to confuse with San Antonio Speedway. Why not call it San Antonio Dragway???????????? Nick Holt
