NickHolt
A short recap of the ROMCO race at THR on 9/27/03 Although Chris Davidson qualified fourth (14.629 seconds) he started on the pole as ROMCO inverted the top four qualifiers. And that was all it took a he led all 125 laps in winning the ROMCO Super Late Model “Texas Tornado Tour” feature at Thunder Hill Raceway Saturday night. ASA standout Casey Smith set fast time (14.474) while Brandon Bendele qualified second fastest (14.620) and Chris’ dad, Greg Davidson was third fastest (14.627). Thunder Hill Raceway lived up to its growing reputation as a hard place to pass as the front-running three or four or five ran nose to tail for most of the race -- Chris in first, Greg in second, Brandon in third and either Smith, Eddie Wallace or Bradley Riethmeyer in fourth and Tommy Grimes in fifth. There was, however, one major attempt by the elder Davidson to get by his son at about lap 75. Going through turn three Greg gave Chris a solid tap and the younger Davidson almost spun. Greg checked up and Bendele made an evasive move to the high side which put him side by side with G. Davidson as they exited turn four. Chris managed to stay in front after an amazing recovery while Greg and Brandon drag-raced down the front straight in a battle for second spot. Greg won the race and got the line into turn one and Bendele dropped back in line. For the rest of the race nobody mounted a serious challenge for the top three spots. For the first half of the race Casey Smith, running in fourth and locked to Bendele’s rear bumper, looked to be a threat, but gradually Smith faded and pulled into the pits with some sort of mechanical woes on the 77th lap. Bradley Reithmeyer who won the last ROMCO race Houston Motor Speedway, started sixth and drove a patient race following Eddie Wallace who was fighting an Ill-handling race car and would slip back a bit after each restart. Around 75 both Reithmeyer and Grimes were able to squeeze by Wallace on the underside to take over the fourth and fifth postions. After the race Chris said, “My Dad drove me clean. We got together a little bit at one point, but I don’t worry about my Dad.” The race was slowed by six yellows (approximate lap – my best guess). 1) Lap 9 – Tommy Grothues spins in turn 2 2) Lap 20 - Clay Huckaby blow a motor in a huge cloud of smoke down the front straight. 3) Lap 35 - T Wade Welch off track in turn one and kicks lots of dirt onto racing surface 4) Lap 87 - Robert Richardson and Dan Harris get together in turn 1 and both spin 5) Lap 97 - Mark Chrudimsky gets into Eddie Wallace in turn 2, both spin 6) Lap 101 – Not sure why this yellow was thrown. It might have been because Dan Harris’ car had stopped on track, but I can’t really recall. Nick Holt
