Honeycutt in a Ford Wins ARTS at Houston

September 18, 2003

Story by Kelly Freeman

After several attempts, the AllStar Race Truck Series finally raced in Houston, TX this season after the schedule has been plagued with rain. For the first time since 2000, a Ford has won in the Lone Star Region of ARTS. Kirby Honeycutt drove a flawless race on the 3/8 of a mile high banked speedway to win his first ARTS event in his 2 years on the tour.

Time trials earlier in the evening would have Steve Green as the fastest qualifier but after the top 4 inverted he would start 4th. The invert would put Joe Napoleon on the pole with Kirby Honeycutt on the outside. Todd McLemore would start the 50 lap event in 3rd.

On the first lap, Kirby Honeycutt in the #12 got the holeshot as he launched into the lead from the outside beating Joe Napolean's #9 into turn 1. Further back in the field there was contact going into turn one on this first lap. The #10 of Robert Walton and Bud Carroll in the #18 got together causing both to spin. Both kept going rejoining the race on the back and no caution resulted.

Later in the race the #21 of Keith Patrick, who started 10th, got together with another truck in turn 3 causing his left front fender to fall off. Several trucks ran over the debris causing it to fly to the highside of the track and out of the racing grooves resulting in no caution period. The #39 of Chad Cambron and the #30 of Bryan Meredith made contact on lap 48 in turn 2. Meredith would spin to the inside but kept going as no yellow flag was thrown.

Colt James, who won the ARTS Championship in 2000 and 2001, rejoined ARTS for this Houston event. James started his #27 truck in 7th and made a couple nice moves in his climb to 4th.

Kirby Honeycutt in his #12 Ford led all 50 laps of the race as it went caution free before the near sold out crowd at Houston Motorsports Park. With 4 races left in 3 weekends the points championship is still up in the air.

Just a suggestion, next time you might want to send it to Nick or Jason so they can post it in the Press Release forum....nice job, though!
