The All Star Outlaw Late Model Series held its first event at the historical fairgrounds oval, a 100 lap event. Portage, Michigan’s Phil Bozell took the lead about a third of the way through the event and went on to win. The series offers an alternative to the template Late Model series, which has seen rising cost in the recent past. The Outlaw Late Models are very popular in the Midwest, both for fans and drivers. A familiar driver set fast time in qualifying. Long time Birmingham driver Gary Nix turned a 20.197 to take the pole. However, Nix rolled a five on the inversion, putting Chris Benson on the pole. When the green dropped, Gary Wade Finley took the lead from the outside pole. However, Nix quickly came to the front, taking the lead on the third lap. Harold Fair, Jr. followed Nix to the front, moving into second on lap four. Nix gained a slight advantage over Fair in the opening laps, but Fair began to reel the leader in. By lap 15, Fair was looking for a way around Nix, but Nix’s experience at Birmingham allowed him to keep Fair at bay. Fair could close on Nix going into the turns, but Nix maintained his line and could pull away exiting the turns. While Nix and Fair were battling up front, Bozell was closing in. Bozell moved into second on lap 31.One lap later, Bozell made his move to the inside of Nix. Once out front, Bozell pulled away to a comfortable lead. Nix’s night came to an end after contact with fair sent him spinning into the backstretch wall on lap 45. Fair retired on lap 70 after spinning into the turn four wall. Finley tried to keep pace with Bozell, but when the race went green for any length of time, Bozell was able to show his strength, pulling away from Finley. Finley’s last shot came on a lap 71 caution period. He got a good start, but Bozell maintained the front spot. With the race going green the final 26 laps, Bozell eased away from Finley to take the win.Finley followed Bozell across the stripe several car lengths back. Benson finished third. Andy Bozell was fourth. Fair was credited with fifth. The next event fro the series will be announced in the near future.
