New wins TSRS race at Thunder Hill Raceway

KYLE — Bobby Joe New led all 50 laps to win the Texas Super Racing Series season opener at Thunder Hill Raceway.

New started on the pole and quickly paced the 22-car starting field.

San Antonio's Joe Aramendia, who won the NASCAR Late Model track championship last year at San Antonio Speedway, placed second. Jesse Salazar was third, Bobby Teer Jr. was fourth and Tommy Gural was fifth.

Rounding out the top ten were James Reeder, Ian Webster, Craig Sellman, Adam Haugh and Chris Schild.

The race was plagued with six cautions mainly for minor spins. Of the 22 cars that started the race, 17 were still running at the finish.

Next up is the 150-lap NASCAR Grand National Division West Series Allstate Texas Thunder 150.

NASCAR legend Terry Labonte is here and will serve as the grand marshal. Labonte, a two-time NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion and native of Texas, will give the command to start the races. Labonte's son, Justin, will be competing in the NASCAR race.

Justin will start the race on the outside of the seventh row after posting a lap time of 15.203 seconds during qualifying. The race is schedule to begin at 8:25 p.m.

Guys, the NASCAR boys have been racing three wide since the beginning, partly due to the double-file restarts. Last year and this, they were hampered by the fact the track was very green, even after practicing Friday and Saturday. It will be fun to watch when they get a seasoned track.

By the way, last year the USAC National Midget Series guys (and gals) set a new, absolute lap record in the high 13s -- on a damp, green and cold track. If the weather cooperates a bit more next Saturday, the whole field might be faster than last year's pole time...
