Those are some awesome pics!

Jim Chapman

J.R. Hand

and the awesome Ford of Tommy Stanley

Is Jim Chapman still building cars out of Baytown?

I can remember watching that yellow Ford fly around Battleground and Big H.

I have some old Battleground pics I will post.

Post some more......

Some signatures from Battleground. I believe one special one is that of Ron Hughes whom was killed in a sprint car accident?

The 22 sprint car was from the WOO when they came to Battleground...I think around 1989, The announcer said that the owner was an engineer and that was how a sprint car should be designed...Car was super cool....not the fastest...but I think that was due to lack of motor and driver. The 24 car was the magnificant mustang( built by chapman)...I have a few pic (not real good ones) of the blue mule too. Chapman race cars are still around...he did have a big driver..cant remember who right now...and I saw them at the thanksgiving STS race. I dont know when you got those autographs...but I had to be around somewhere...#6 troy phillips ran stock cars, but now works as a crew member for Bobby Hamilton jr. 42x Don morton now has a limited. I think his name was Tommy Johnson, from the Dallas area, and your other info is correct.

What car #....and who was the driver? The only ford drivers I remember were Phil Collida and Ed Kennedy (I am sure there were more) Those years were the only time I ever had a home track....lol

We bought the car later on and raced it as a stock car at battleground probably around 1996. It was a white car with green 97. I'll post a picture soon. We sold it to some guy in Willis who raced it in their stockcar class for a while. Dont know where it is now. It was a very solid car and had been rolled several times.

Also, I can think of one more Ford on dirt that was pretty fast. The number 9 of Dean Lyons was pretty quick and even won the championship in 1993? That was also a Chapman Car with another Kenneth Stanley Racing Engine.

We are actually going to race the asphalt modified series this year at HMP.

Yes the 22 sprint looks like the car Tommy Johnson drove,I can't forget about how big the wing was,I think after that they put a max size limit on them.I thought he used to be a school teacher though,he may have changed jobs though. H used to have a roadster looking one years ago was low and flat looking like a thunder roadster.

  • 9 years later...

Whoever posted the original post with the pics did not post the actual pics but rather posted a link to where the Dancers had them stored on their site. Now that they no longer have that URL, the links are no longer valid.

I wish they would post those pics for us, but this time upload the actual pics instead of posting a link.

Saw that car a few times at the Devils Bowl in the 80s. Had a all aluminum big block and a funny car type dragster type steering wheel. Was a mid -pack rear of field car most of the time but every now and then they would hit on something and that thing would fly. Had a World of Outlaws race at the Bowl that was on the old Nashville Network show and the broadcasters were trying to come up with a name for it.
