VP Race Fuels fueled another great night of racing at Texas Thunder Speedway

Another massive crowd was on hand to see the one hundred and twenty-five race cars bulging the pits, spilling over to the auxiliary pits, on VP Race Fuels night at Texas Thunder Speedway, in Killeen, Tx. Helping to set the near record car count, were eight exciting cars from the Iron Head Winged Modifieds.

 

The Cottman Transmissions Teen Mini Stocks started the feature racing off for the night, with six youngsters on hand to do battle for ten laps. Ryan Ellis got the early jump, to be followed by Joseph Charnock. On lap four those two tangled at the flag stand, with both crashing in turn one. Charnock's night was over then and there, with Ellis only lasting a couple of laps more.

 

A lap after the restart, with Julie Kelly Zwiefelhofer in the lead, she and her brother Travis Zwiefelhofer along with Colten Monroe went three wide in a battle for the lead in turn four. They all three made contact, with Monroe, who was on the low side, getting the better of the two siblings, and took over the lead. Monroe would win his first of the year by half of a straight over T. Zwiefelhofer and a fading J. Zwiefelhofer. Monroe and J. Zwiefelhofer are tied for the points lead.

The Cleo Bay Honda Street Stocks were next up with a full twenty-four car grid for their twenty lap feature race. Outside pole sitter, Eric Jones got the early jump, followed by Mitch Tierney, who would drop back after a restart on lap five and wouldn't be a factor after that. The top five on lap six was Jones, Joe Fuller, Robert Simmerman, Trevor Sparkman, and Michael Legore. On lap seven, twelve place starter, Simmerman passed both J. Fuller and Jones to take over the lead. J. Fuller followed Simmerman around Jones to get to second. A lap later and Sparkman would get by Jones for third.

 

Sparkman and Jones would then begin a battle for third that lasted to the finish. It would turn into a battle for second when on lap eleven, J. Fuller lost a right rear wheel and pulled into the infield. With two laps left to go, and Simmerman stretching his lead, the battle for second switched hands several times, with Jones just getting the spot at the line. Simmerman, the defending, two time track champion, won by a full straight over Jones and Sparkman. Needless to say, being two for two on the season, Simmerman is the points leader.

The Corbin & Associates, Atty's I. M. C. A. Stock Cars were up next with eighteen cars on the gird for their fifteen lap feature race. Jason “The Acro” Batt, the outside pole sitter got the early lead as the green flag waved. On lap six there was a yellow for crash with Shad Stevens and Don Lewis all tangled up in turn two. On the restart, it was again Batt with the lead, followed by Eric Jones, and Benji Kirkpatrick who got around Daniel Shipler in third. On lap seven, Jones would get alongside Batt in turn three, with the two racing door handle to door handle for the lead. But Batt held off the former track champion coming out of turn four.

 

Jones dove under Batt in turn two on lap nine, with the two racing hard, side by side, all the way around the track to turn two again. This time Jones would get the lead. Kirkpatrick got around B in turn three as well, to take over second. Kirkpatrick would hound Jones the rest of the way, and drove hard into turn three under Jones coming to the checkered flag. But Jones was just able to get a better run out of four and held off last week's winner, Kirkpatrick, to take his first win of the year. Kirkpatrick retains his points lead.

The Dodge Country I. M. C. A. Modifieds were up next with twenty-two of the fire breathing, ground pounders on the grid for their twenty lap feature race. Anthony Otken got the early jump and lead to turn one, but by the time they reached turn three, fourth place starter, P, J. Ebgert had the lead. Andrew Simmerman moved to second on lap one. On lap three, last week's winner, Pat McGuire and Allen Waltimire were wheel to wheel for fourth, which McGuire secured. He then got around Otken for third a lap later.

 

Waltimire brought out a yellow on lap seven by stopping on the track. On the restart. On the restart, McGuire and Ken Old got around Simmerman for second and third. On lap eight the race for the lead heated up, with McGuire getting alongside Egbert. They raced side by side down the back stretch and stayed that way to the front stretch. As they raced into turn one, McGuire took over the lead. On lap eleven, Egbert got by McGuire in turn two. In turn three, McGuire almost spun and lost second to Old.

 

On lap fourteen, McGuire used the high side in turn two to get back second from Old. At the white flag, with Egbert stretching his lead over McGuire, Old and Simmerman were in a terrific battle for third. Simmerman got around Old in turn two, but Old got him back in turn three. Former I. M. C. A. National Modified Rookie of the Year Egbert, won his first race of the year by a half straight. McGuire retains the points lead.

The Iron Head Winged Modifieds were up next for their fifteen lap feature with eight cars on the grid. Pole sitter David Williams got the lead going into turn one at the drop of the green flag. On lap four Charlie Williams got around David Suggs for second. On lap eight Rick Poteet took third from Suggs. Meanwhile back up front, D. Williams was lapping his way up to fourth place. He went on to win the race by half a track over C. Williams.

Twenty-five Danny's Transmissions I. M. C. A. Southern SportMods were on hand. That necessitated running a twelve lap B-Main to set the twenty car feature race. It took four tries to get the A-Main started. The first start was aborted on a jump start. The second start was scary as Robert Williams got turned on the front straight. Fourteen year old Kenneth Graves, who won last week, and had to race his way into the A-Main through the B-Main, collected Williams, sending both out of the race.

 

On the third start, Kenny Ware almost flipped his car in turn one, and rolled to a stop on the back stretch. You could see the entire underside of the car, and most in the crowd thought he was going over on his head. On the next try at a start, leader Kevin Green almost flipped his car in turn four, but he was able to continue, though he lost two positions. It was George Egbert in the lead, followed by Sid “The Kid” Kiphen, K. Green, Brandon Stewart, and Keith White. Kiphen would use the high side in turn three on lap five to get by G. Egbert for the top spot. White, who had been moving up, got around G. Egbert for second on lap six.

 

On lap nine, the two time, and defending I. M. C. A. Southern SportMods National Champion, White used a slide job to get the lead from Kiphen in turn one. Kiphen would stay close to White in the dieing laps, make several challenges for the lead, but not getting back by White. On the white flag lap G. Egbert's engine blew going into turn three. White won his first race at Texas Thunder in 2007 by one car length from Kiphen. White's win give him the point lead.

Last but never least, twenty Budweiser Racing Texas Twisters came out for their fifteen lap feature race. Jackie Fetzer and T. J. Yagalla wagged war for nearly the entire fifteen laps, with the two exchanging the lead several times. Neither driver knew it, but this race would be their last in those cars, as both had been claimed prior to the race. T. J. Yagalla would win the battle to the checkered flag, but both he and Fetzer will have to find new rides next week. Gary White is the points leader.

No muffler means an automatic disqualification. There is no grace period in effect for mufflers. No muffler, no money or points.

 

Gates open at 6:00 PM and racing starts at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $10 for Adults, $3 for kids 6-12 and kids under 6 are free. Season passes are available as well.
